Apple Mail Opens and Immediatley Closes

So pretty much the description says it all. My apple mail will open, begin to download messages, then just immediately close prompting me with the message "apple mail just closed unexpectedly etc." I am using the most current apple mail, all my software is up-to-date and it has been happening for a while, however, it does not happen when I use my new email client entourage.
