Apple Mail Problem

Came home tonight logged onto my iMac to check my mail and now have a problem.

trying to launch mail from the toolbar brings up a box saying I need to import my mail into the new version of mail, hit continue and I get the message not enough space in my home folder, checked the folder size and there is at least 20gb of space. Tried again but selected the option to quit mail to import later, this does not work at all.

I am running Lion have have been since it came out.

Any help appreciated
