Hello experts. Very recently, I "moved house" (i.e. I installed High Sierra 10.13.6 onto a spare partition on my iMac, and started using this OS, instead of Sierra, on the old partition). While trying to cure a problem (which has since been cured, but not by re-setting the SMC), I re-set the SMC when restarting. After that, I found that the sounds that Apple Mail should make, when sending and receiving messages, did not work any more. I have tried throwing out the Apple Mail preferences, I have tried changing the type of sound for received mail (my preference would be Glass, but I have tried others), I have tried quitting Mail etc., but the sounds don't work. There is not even the Whoosh sound, when a message is sent. Oh, I also checked that Sound, in System Preferences, is set correctly (i.e. that sounds are set to come through the built-in speakers — etc.).
Can anyone tell me what can be done to get the sounds to work again? I feel fairly sure that it was my re-setting the SMC that did this, though I could be mistaken, of course. I don't have the expertise to delete possibly corrupted files relevant to Mail app (except the preferences), so, at the moment, I am snookered.
With thanks for any helpful suggestions,
C.H.
