Apple Mail - why are some deleted items missing subject lines in list view?

This is strange - I use Apple Mail with Gmail. When I delete items, some of them appear fine in the Trash. Others, while they are there, don't have a subject line in the list view. If I view the email it looks just fine. There is just no subject in the list view. Any ideas?

I just switched to a Mac yesterday for the first time ever.
