Apple Mail won't take Gmail offline

Has anyone else had trouble getting AppleMail to keep Gmail offline? When I set Apple Mail to offline mode, it takes icloud offline but will not keep gmail offline. Ideas?

yes, and the account goes back online.

I'm not seeing that after a couple of hours…macOS 13.3.1 on a Mac Studio. I don't usually have mail turned on for my Google account but with it on and all accounts offline I haven't had that issue.
