This applies to all versions of Apple Mail that I've used.

In Mail, if you bring up the Activity Window (a sub-item in the Window menu), I see that Mail regularly goes through a routine of reading every single email in the IMAP system. Not sure how to describe this technically, but it can take close to an hour to go through all the data. I have 6GB of mail IMAP data.

When I was on landline broadband, this didn't bother me -- but now that I'm traveling on mobile broadband, I'm concerned that this just eats through my monthly mobile data allowance.

Is this just part of IMAP that I have to accept -- or are other different email clients less likely to do this? I can't tell because few other email clients have this Activity Window.

I read, years ago, that Apple Mail is a real bandwidth hog, but not sure what the updated information is.
