Apple Maps now has expanded coverage for cycling directions in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The expansion, first spotted by a Reddit user, means cyclists can plan a journey on the app from, say, Land's End to John o' Groats, if they're that way inclined.

Cycling directions have been available in the UK and Ireland for a few years, but until now, support didn't cover the whole of the region. Cycling directions in Apple Maps provide specific directions for bike riders with bike lanes, bike paths, and bike-friendly routes that highlight steep inclines, stairs, and other obstacles.

Cycling directions came to ‌Apple Maps‌ in iOS 14, and are available across the United States, Australia, China, France, Germany, and Japan, as well as in select major cities around the world, such as London, Barcelona, and Toronto. Apple maintains a list of all of the areas where cycling directions are available on its website.

I’ve found Apple Map’s cycling directions to generally be pretty good in the places where it’s available and the UI is so much better than Google maps. But the pace of expansion is unforgivably slow given how much money Apple can afford to put into their maps.

How about Apple Maps DIRECTIONS (period) expand to my country. So far i can just look at a map and have no way to know how to get there. No driving, no walking, nothing. I wonder how many countries there are, still without any directional guidance?

Gradually dripping out features to cover some areas does not seem to be a good way with mapping. There are not enough resources put into Apple Maps to make it a consistent experience, or competitive with other options. Go big or go niche. Apple Maps is neither.

I live in the cycling capital of the UK, where olympic cycling events have been hosted... no availability here.

Erm no. Just planned a cycling route to the nearest city, told Apple Maps to avoid busy roads, and it wanted to send me down a busy A road. i.e. a British 60mph highway.

I think I'll continue using cycle.travel for the time being.

The routing constantly sends you down very dangerous and busy roads. Cyclers.app is so much safer

Am I missing something? Using the link from MR's post to Apple's page, all I see related to the UK is:

London, United Kingdom Under the 'Maps: Cycling' heading.

So that's just the capital city – no rest of UK, and no Ireland either.
Just had a look at a route I travel in Glasgow. Results in Apple Maps ignore the dedicated cycle routes and suggest either very busy roads with no cycle lanes, or an optional slightly longer route partly through a park at least. Google Maps on the other hand suggests a segregated bike route straight away. "Cycling directions" outside London still seems to mean a car route with a different icon.

Speaking ot Apple Maps app....

Can somebody please explain to me how to manually choose two different points on the map? Both start and end?

I need to check for example how long it is going to take me to walk/cycle from one point to another - how do I do this? I couldn't find a way.

And if it really is as it is, then this must be the dumbest map app ever.

Thanks for any help.

Fantastic. I’ll take a look…
Hmm. I don’t think so. It’s a bit of a fight to get maps to allow you to plan a custom route for cycling - it’s necessary to change your default method of travel - and even then it doesn’t seem to compute time of travel correctly, like it’s still actually using on-foot mode. I planned a frequently travelled well known route and it gets the distance very wrong - 15 miles as opposed to the 22 miles I know it be. Try komoot or even OS Maps for a far better and more accurate experience.

Good to hear this. Expansion of these features is taking a lot of time. Still waiting for it to be available in my country. Hopefully soon.

Can't trust apple maps, they just change landmarks that have had their names on the world map since 1552, long before the moronic country that wants to change its name even existed
I'll stick to mapping from within Europe that will be accurate and not Americanised nonsense
