Ford Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning customers that use the Apple Maps EV Routing feature in CarPlay can now be automatically routed to EV chargers that use the North American Charging Standard (NACS), Ford announced today.

NACS chargers include the Tesla Supercharger, which the Apple Maps EV Routing function did not previously support. Ford says that no software update is required, with NACS support for Apple Maps EV routing available on iPhones running iOS 17 or later and connected to CarPlay.

To be directed to NACS fast charging stations, Ford owners need to set their charging network preference in the Apple Maps Settings to NACS chargers. A Fast Charging Adapter compatible with NACS fast chargers is also required.

Apple introduced the Apple Maps EV Routing feature in 2023, but it continues to be limited in scope. Only the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Porsche Taycan use it, because car manufacturers need to implement support for it to work.

‌Apple Maps‌ EV Routing uses real-time vehicle information to help customers get to their destination, with charging stops recommended when necessary. ‌Apple Maps‌ analyzes elevation changes along a route and other factors to determine when to suggest a charging stop, and if the vehicle's battery gets too low, it will provide a route to the nearest compatible charging station.

Signs of NACS support for the Apple Maps RV Routing feature were seen in iOS 18.4, but it turns out the iOS 18.4 update is not needed, with Apple able to make the change over-the-air.

So if you change charging preference to NACS chargers, will it only show NACS chargers, or can I get it to show either type of charger? I'd think it'd be best to have the option of going to either style rather than choosing one or the other.

well, that took 9+ months after Ford got access to SuC?
I guess for my Ioniq 5 I'm gonna have to wait at least 1 year ...

Got me a Lightning and can't wait to try this out 🥳
So far Ive been able to use all the Magicdock stations which have been the best experience so far. The worst part was having to use the Tesla app to bring me to them and filter out the ones that work with the truck.
Hopefully this works well enough that I only have to get in and have Apple maps plan it all out for me on the drive.

Only when connected to CarPlay? What if you want to plan the route on your phone beforehand?

Does the app know the car’s state of charge? How integrated is it with the car?

Yes, that is why it only works with an extremely limited number of vehicles. The car can send send data back to the phone and the phone can use the up to date data to plan routing.

Really wish this would come to the ID.4, but I would be happy with VW would fix the door handles so the door won't fly open while I am driving.

Mach-e owner. This sounds like awesome news, but it's actually pointless. Ford only supports battery preconditioning if you use Ford's default navigation system. So if you actually use this new Apple maps feature, your charging session will take longer and possibly cost more. I really hope Ford changes this.

How are you liking the Lightning? Any issues? Been eyeing a 24 Lariat the past couple of weeks.

I have a rental Chevy Equinox EV 2025 and I can confirm without Apple Carplay the experince is a full miesery, GM is so on the wrong path while Ford is smart.

I think you mean server-side, because even if it required the update it would still be over-the-air.

Stay far away from anything having to do with Musk & Tesla.
Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels? We make tools for these kinds of people. While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

That’s insane! I have an ID4 too! And I think I heard about door handle recalls but so far I haven’t had issues with mine thankfully.

That sounds like something that has to change eventually.
Do some stations charge money per time? It should always be per energy unit delivered in my opinion.

I actually haven't had any issues, but the recall has been outstanding for months. Every time I call the dealer, they tell me they have to order the parts, then I never hear back from the them.

You have a reason besides personal politics? I live in Rural Alaska and Starlink has been a game changer for us after years of relying on scams like HughesNet for internet. Most of the families in the small town my sister in law lives in all have internet in their homes because of Starlink, where previously the only connection in town was in the city hall, and you had to reserve time in 30 minute increments 2 weeks out at least.
You can dislike him, but keep that nonsense out of here. There are plenty of websites and forums to discuss politics, but this isn’t one of them.

Why are there only a a handful of manufacturers working with Apple? I have the feeling that the Google Car platform is getting really big and Apple failed to be first line here.

There are a few states that charge by the minute because of laws prohibiting non-utility companies from directly selling electricity. To be honest in those states cars that can charge really fast probably pay less than those that don't (so all the 800V cars).
