Apple Maps has been updated with comprehensive transit data for the U.S. cities of Honolulu, Hawaii and Kansas City, Missouri, enabling iPhone users in the areas to navigate using public transportation, including buses and commuter rails.

Transit routing options in the Kansas City metropolitan area include RideKC buses and the downtown KC Streetcar. Directions extend to most suburbs in both Kansas and Missouri, including Overland Park, Olathe, Independence, Lee's Summit, Shawnee, Blue Springs, Lenexa, and other smaller communities.

Transit routing options in Honolulu include TheBus buses, with directions extending to destinations across the entire Oahu island.

Apple introduced Transit in Maps as part of iOS 9 in select cities around the world, including Baltimore, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Sydney, Toronto, and 30 cities in China.

The feature has since expanded to a number of additional cities and regions around the world, including Atlanta, Denver, Miami, Montréal, Portland, Rio de Janeiro, Sacramento, Seattle, and New South Wales, Australia.

(Thanks, Ram!)

How about the Netherlands? Our country is known for its transit system. I'm using the bus and train to get to school, as well as more locations throughout the region. People who live here know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I'd love to replace the '9292' app (transit app in NL) by Apple's Transit maps. :p

Huh. I didn't realize Oahu had public transit. I rented a car when I went. I wonder how useful their public transit is... maybe there's no need to rent a car next time I go?

I find these transit updates to be WAY more useful than the flyovers. Hopefully they will focus more on transit. :)

In other maps-related news, when did Google Maps attain "Flyover" functionality? I just noticed it in my desktop browser today. Here's an image from downtown Chicago. So now Google Maps does Flyover and Street View. I like that when you zoom in close enough, it automatically transitions from Flyover to Street View. Take notes, Apple!

Apple Maps fails once again.

Took me the long circuitous route to an appointment, instead of the direct way. A full fifteen minutes wasted. Just thought I'd give Apple Maps another try after reading posts saying it was improved. In major metropolitan Los Angeles, you'd think Apple would at least be as good as Google.

Perhaps this area is too rural and unknown to the company from Cupertino ...

Impressed that 30 cities in china are covered.
Yet Apple still can’t get Los Angeles mapped out accurately!

Google Earth has had "flyover" for a long time. The "melted bridges" meme started with Google Earth.

And before their version of flyover, they had 3d models for major buildings.

I don't use the web version of Google Maps all that often, but there was an option to include google earth imagery using a plugin. Doesn't seem to be there for Safari on the Mac, though.

Awesome. Now I can know how late our useless streetcar will be to pick me up to go nowhere.
Wah. Go cry in the corner some more as ridership continues to impress. Extension to UMKC (and the Plaza) won't be too far off.

I'd love to give a rationale reason for the way the locations are being chosen, can't find one though

I never thought I'd ever see Blue Springs mentioned by name on MacRumors, hah. My home town.

Still no flyover though? Never would have predicted transit before flyover. Much smaller towns like Springfield, MO and Witchita, KS have it for crying out loud! Hopefully this means the next round of flyover additions will feature KC.

Google Maps has its version of Flyover which covers the Kansas City Metro and Blue Springs, specifically.

You're right. I'd forgotten that Google Earth had a Flyover equivalent ages ago. I see they've just taken that and put it in the browser. In Chrome, when I'm looking at a map on Google Maps, in the bottom-left corner there's a thumbnail satellite image that says "Earth". Click on that and you get the satellite view and also the 3D view a la Google Earth.

Google's offering doesn't appear to be any worse than Apple's Flyover in terms of quality. In fact, I'd say in the handful of cities I've looked at, I think Google's Flyover is actually superior in quality to Apple's. I have yet to spot a "melting" bridge in Google's Flyover.
