Apple Maps now offers cycling navigation across all 50 U.S. states, allowing users to receive turn-by-turn directions while riding a bike.

Apple Maps cycling directions fully covered 49 U.S. states as of July, according to Apple Maps enthusiast Justin O'Beirne, and cycling directions have since become available in Hawaii for complete nationwide coverage.

Apple Maps offers cycling directions along bike lanes, bike paths, and bike-friendly roads as much as possible, complete with details like elevation, how busy a street is, and whether there are stairs along a route. On the Apple Watch, voice guidance and haptic feedback make it easier for users to stay focused on the path ahead.

Apple Maps cycling directions are also available in select other regions, including China, London, Barcelona, Toronto, Montréal, and Vancouver.

Apple is playing catch up here with Google Maps, which began rolling out cycling directions in 2010 and now offers the feature in over 30 countries. However, Google Maps is only just now beginning to roll out granular details for cycling directions, like elevation, how busy a street is, and whether there are stairs along a route.

I'll use this once I buy an electric bicycle. I used to do 25 mile per day rides or longer but not any longer. Now I'm watching my bike sit and going to the gym which is sad but I think an electric assist would be a great way to get back out and with the range many of them have I could use some of the routing maybe. I cant tell if it finds safe roads or if that is still on me. Right around here you have to watch out but not too far away we have bike paths where you can go for many miles without a car around.

could it offer cycling directions in Amsterdam, that would be neat.
SARC ON: Really, you think they could handle the most bycle-friendly place on the planet?

Kidding aside, they really are late to the game here. In Europe, I never use apple maps, it's hopeless frankly. Rumour had it that they would take 10 years to catch up to google, well it's been at least 10 years and they are ages behind still... Unless they build an index of the internet as google has, I wonder if they will ever be able to catch up frankly... Maps are really much more than simply the streets on a page...

I get that apple can’t just release every maps feature on day one or even day 2001 but when they do a maps demo in an iOS keynote showing off the way they’ve slightly updated how shadows fall off buildings and there’s still no cycling directions in your city of 500k people it does make you scratch your head a little on where their priorities are.

Its embarrassing how far behind Google Apple are with Maps. I try and use apple maps 90% of the time but there's always those times when it just doesn't work. Unfortunately Google Maps is a battery hog so I don't like using it too much.
