Apple appears to have updated its Maps coverage to add transit directions in Austria, with a focus on public transportation routes in and around the capital, Vienna.

Apple Maps users in the country can now select transit routes when getting directions between two locations, with U-Bahn and S-Bahn train routes included in the coverage.

iPhone-ticker.de notes that map options for other Austrian cities have also been expanded, although some regions still lack full coverage. Maps has integrated regional trains into its transit directions for Innsbruck, for example, but other modes of public transport in the area are still missing.

Transit directions were first added to ‌Apple Maps‌ in 2015 with the launch of iOS 9. Maps initially only offered transit information in a handful of cities, but over the course of the last five years, Apple has worked to expand the feature to additional areas.

Transit information is now live in dozens of cities and countries around the world, with a full list available on Apple's iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability website, although it has not yet been updated to include Austria.

(Thanks, Florian!)

Finally! 😅

I imagine it's really hard for people from the US to imagine how far behind Apple services in other countries are. Not saying this is always Apples fault btw, I'm well aware there are different regulations at play. At the same time, how long did we already have that feature in Google Maps? It must be years by now.

Google Maps has transit information in literally every place on earth. Sometimes even in places where google maps is blocked (China).

if Apple wants to be a competitor to google, they need to adapt features fast and globally. Not a city every year...

Many people, including myself, just want to pick the app that always works. Apple just doesn’t deliver that

Yeah, these are always my thoughts, google maps with this feature has been available in Vienna for what seems forever now. Meanwhile, while Siri is available in German, it is still not available in my mother tongue, i.e. Polish (Google Assistant is). Unfortunately in Europe we get to pay more than in the US for a sub-par product

Funny side note: I'm also a born polish living in Vienna :))

HomePod (mini) works in Austria, you just have to import it. (z.b. beim Cyberport kaufen). But you have to set your iphone's language to German (Germany) to get the whole Siri-functionality.

Bicycle directions, Siri on AppleTV and LTE Watch on Drei Network next, please.

I know you can import it, but I'd rather have it officially. Also Siri on Apple TV would be nice to, of course (maybe even nicer 🤔).

while you are at it: Siri support for Apple TV is missing in Austria, too. Thank you!

(They support it in Germany, we speak german too, come on, this can’t be rocket science.)

I like how this thread has become a place to mention all the things Apple needs internationally. It wouldn't be so bad if users, you know, had a choice to set their default maps services, etc. to something that worked more reliably

And we still can‘t use/buy the homepod, although Germany has it.

The last time I was in Vienna I had the first generation iPhone. It would be such an experience to go back there now.

It baffles me why a company with the resources of Apple are so massively behind with their maps.
Vienna is a beautiful but small city, and this is really a non-story.
However still better than nothing, and competition can only be a positive thing.

Vienna is not a small city at all, it‘s one of the biggest cities in the EU, but yeah, I agree with you.

Well.. it's half the size of Berlin and nearly 5x smaller than London (assuming we're referring to Europe, rather than the EU;)

Anyway, it's things like this which really highlight the fact to everyone else how USA-centric Apple is. No surprise I guess, just a good reminder.

And London is one of the biggest Western cities, so that does not mean much.
To me, 2 Million people is not exactly what I consider small. ;)

I really don't get how Apple can't commit to including readily available public transportation data at a faster pace. Google will always stay #1 in Maps if they don't double down anytime soon.

I had the iPhone 4 and ultrasn0w for a software unlock :)

Vienna, AT was (maybe still is? haven't been in a decade now) an amazing city and truly unique.

I have fond memories of my time there which was a few months.
