or it could be a ploy to try and get more people buying it at launch in case they don't get one right away.

I'm always cynical of these things since being number one is everything.

Take a movie, it is second at the box office for 6 months, but never makes it to number one. It may have sold more than any of the number 1 movies for the last 6 months, but still it never reached that magical spot. It's not deemed a failure, but nor is it deemed a raging success.

Now, why not start a hype that there wont be enough tickets to go around for people to see the movie...suddenly there is a mad rush and people flock to the cinema, and the film makes number 1....the marketing people are happy, the investors are happy and so on.

of course, it could be that Apple are suffering supply problems...
