I have a 3rd generation Apple TV with iTunes radio in it and I am about to purchase a new 4th generation Apple TV.

I know the new Apple TV features apple music instead of iTunes radio. My question is, does it allow to play the free radios as in the iTunes radio app without an apple music subscription?

I do not have a subscription and play Apple Music stations. They have "featured stations" and then below that are categories with about 60 other choices. I don't play stations a lot, but have never noticed any ads. To get other stations you might want, add them on your iPhone or iPad, play them for a short time and they will show up on your tv as "recently played" which is the first row of icons you see when you open radio. That way you can add artist stations or whatever.

Just checked- you can also search on the ATV for stations directly and play them. For instance, an artist station.
