Bloomberg claims sources close to the negotiations say an agreement between Apple and labels will be reached before the middle of the year.

The reports said, “A deal would provide iTunes customers with a permanent backup of music purchases if the originals are damaged or lost […] The move would be a step closer to universal access to content centrally stored on the internet."

Both 7digital and eMusic are among the digital music sites that currently allow users to re-download tracks they have already paid for.

This can only be a good thing. I shall certainly consider downloading more from iTunes in the future than buying CD's if Apple are successful.
