I happen to be in a position to purchase an Apple Network Server 700. I am very interested in trying my hand at installing Yellow Dog Linux on it but before I purchase I am wondering if any one here could help me answer a few lingering questions I have.

From pictures I have seen on the 'net, it looks as though the processor daughter card is identical to other Power Macs of the period (7500, 7600, 8600, 9600, etc.). This has led me to ponder as to whether a processor upgrade designed for one of those machines will work in a Network Server (the one I'm looking at comes with a 150mhz. 604e, so I would really like to bump it up to at least a low end G3).

Also, I read that it has 6 PCI slots and that the drive bays are SCSI-2 (which I presume is 50-pin SCSI). Is it possible to install a PCI ATA Card and thread the IDE cables to a couple of the drive bays (sense most ATA cards support four drives and the Network Server has 9 drive bays.)

Aside from a few Apple historical sites, I can find very little information as to the inner workings of these machines. I am hoping that someone here has actually seen the guts of one and, even better, has actually worked with one.

Any help would be appreciated, TIA.
