I use Apple News +, primarily on my iPad but also occasionally on my Macs (running Monterey). I sometimes find News open on a Mac, when I have not opened it. Which is annoying; if I want it I'll open it myself, thanks.

Has anyone else found this happening? I just don't like having programs decide to load for unknown reasons, which sounds like something from the Windows world.

Thanks,

John

Apps don't open by themselves. Check System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items. If News is set to open at login, remove it from that list. It's also possible that certain URLs are set to open in the News app.

Well, News is not in my login list. And I only restart my machines occasionally, anyway. It may be possible that mail items with a URL could do it, though. I sometimes send myself an email from the iPad so I can use the Mac to see the article. Clicking on the link in the email opens News of course. What might be interesting is if News opens if the email appears in Mail, but the link has not been used. I'll test that.

Thanks,

John

I experience this too. The above does NOT address the issue. The cause is currently unknown otherwise I would have solved it. Switching workspaces seems to be where this is happening and it's OBVIOUSLY a bug.

Please define "opening". Does the News app actually start up by itself, or was it already running and did it just open a window unexpectedly?

The reason I ask is because although I don't use News, I've had Maps open up windows unexpectedly (but only if it's running in the background). Apple told me it was by design, but I suspect they were just trying to fob me off.

This is STILL happening. On days when I use Apple News on my iPhone, when I then go to my iMac, it will almost reliably open Apple News and this is 100% without ANY action on my part and NONE of the usual solutions or causes are relevant. It just did it a minute ago and I'm getting sick of this BS, especially when people make absolute statements that "this does not happen" when multiple people report it, and have been reporting it. Several reports of this are on Apple's support forums, with similar lack of anyone taking it seriously other than the people to whom it is happening.

iOS 18.x, Mac OS 13.7.6 (and no, I can't upgrade to a newer Mac OS version)

The application was NOT running. Yes, it opens the app; it does not bring an already-open app to focus.

Another facet of this: It opens as a full-screen application, not a windowed one. I do prefer full-screen mode, but this makes it even more obvious to me that the app was NOT ALREADY running because I am frequently attending to my workspaces.
