At Tuesday's "Peek Performance" event, Apple introduced refreshed versions of the iPhone SE and iPad Air. Both devices are available for pre-order from today, along with Apple's new Green and Alpine Green color options for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro.

The new iPhone SE, which replaces the second-generation version, starts at $429, up from $399 on the 2020 model. It features the same A15 Bionic chip as the one used in the iPhone 13, 5G connectivity, up to 256GB of storage.

Compared to previous models, it includes a higher-perfomance 12MP Wide camera system that offers a range of improvements and computational photography features including Deep Fusion, Photographic Styles, Portrait Mode, and Smart HDR 4.

The new iPad Air, which replaces the fourth-generation version, starts from $599, and features Apple's powerful M1 chip that has previously only been seen in Apple's tablet lineup in the iPad Pro, as well as up to 256GB of storage.

Like the iPad Pro, the iPad Air supports the $129 second-generation Apple Pencil and it works with the $299 Magic Keyboard with trackpad that Apple offers.

Available in a new array of colors, the ‌iPad Air‌ features Apple's Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage for a more natural video conferencing experience, a USB-C port with up to 2x faster transfer speeds, and 5G on the cellular models.

Both the new iPhone SE and iPad Air will be delivered to customers starting on Friday, March 18.

Just a reminder for anyone in the UK looking at getting any of these devices on a carrier contract: next month the RPI is 7.8%. I don't know about other carriers, but O2 also add 3.9% each year. So any airtime charge they are quoting on the website will actually be the airtime+11.7%.

A £26 airtime charge becomes £29.04 next month. Best to wait to get your new contract in April so you postpone the rise for a year (and hopefully the RPI will be a lot lower than this year's 7.8%!).

It looks like launch-day delivery isn't a thing this year, at least in NZ. My order claims that it'll ship on Thursday but not arrive until the following Wednesday; usually they have them turn up on the Friday.

Coming from an 8, this will be my first new phone in 4.5 years! Going for 128 GB this time around having been at 64 since the iPhone 6.

I am getting launch day delivery on the Air 5 in the USA.

Wow, you can't make it up. Five hours after ordering the new one I accidentally* broke the old one. I've had phones for 20-odd years and this is the first time I've ever broken one. Go figure...

*Yes, I assure you it was accidental!

I salute you for holding out so long...how functional was the 6? did you get app updates?
There are many apps that require iOS 13 and do not work, so I have to use Safari, if possible, for those. Apple released the iOS 12.5.5 update in September 2021, so they have been very good at supporting this phone. This update even works on the iPhone 5s, which was released in 2013.

I was just waiting for a more affordable iPhone with 5G because I don’t really want to pay about $1,000.00 for one. I priced a base iPhone 13 mini, with the lower cost AppleCare+, but it came out to about $950.00, after taxes. At that point, I might as well get an iPhone 13 Pro.

I will test this iPhone SE and if the battery life is adequate for my needs, I will keep it. If not, I will probably just get an iPhone 14 Pro, or whatever it gets called, in about six months. I don’t like huge iPhones, so the Plus and Max versions have never been considered.

Whatever I decide to do, the iPhone that I keep will have to last me until the first generation of 6G iPhones comes out, at least.

I'm still using the original iPad Air running iOS 12.something (was it even called iPadOS back then?). For the basics, it works mostly ok, just slow. Most of the apps aren't up to date. I also can't use it for anything work related as my job blocks anything older than iOS 14 from being able to connect. I don't need it for work, but i'd like to have the option. i'm mostly upgrading because i want to actually use the iPad again and have it be an enjoyable experience.
