As noted by AppAdvice, Apple's App Store reviewers have begun approving applications that take advantage of the third-party AirPlay video streaming capabilities present in iOS 4.3. The approvals come as Apple has yet to deploy the software update for public consumption, meaning that regular users are still unable to take advantage of the feature.

One example of a newly-approved AirPlay-compatible application is StreamToMe, a relatively popular universal application that allows users to stream content from Macs and PCs to iOS devices via Wi-Fi or 3G.
What's New in Version 3.5
- Auto detect subtitle encodings
- Preliminary support for WTV files
- Support for AirPlay video (requires iOS 4.3)
- Fixed a crash bug for large or slow folders
Apple issued the first beta version of iOS 4.3 to developers nearly two weeks ago, and followed that up with a second build just a week later. It is unknown when Apple plans to release the software update to the public, but the company may be preparing to release a third beta version tomorrow if the previous one-week interval repeats itself.

Hopefully AirVideo will update to include this too. I use it all the time to stream movies from my Mac to my iPad. Now if I could go from my Mac to my iPad then stream those via Air Play to the AppleTV on my 50" Plasma, that would be awesome!

That's great news. Now just have to wait for untethered jailbreak...

lol Exactly. I already JB my AppleTV 2 with ATV Flash and my original AppleTV and both use AirPlay with a Cydia app installed, with my iPhone 4 and iPad 4.2.1 JB I'm curious if applications such as games, etc. can be used with your iPhones as remotes for a game played through your AppleTV 2 a la Wii.

Why do people care about Airplay?

Can someone explain why airplay is such a big deal?

I can already "stream" all my media via network shares. Unless this works over the internet and I can stream to my iphone when outside my house or something?

Because now you'll be able to stream content from apps on your iPhone (assuming they support that feature).

You can already stream movies directly from your computer to your apple tv with airplay. They just have to be in iTunes (no avi or mkv) =/

Only a few games allows iPhone as controller. They exist now.

There's the helicopter game, and the top down alien shooter (forgot what that's called).

yeah, that's just it, have to convert and all that. plus have to put them in iTunes which is cumbersome.

a lot of phones are coming out with HDMI ports or in Moto's case an HDMI dock. would you rather pay $100 for a cell phone dock that doesn't do anything or an Apple TV?

Sorry I don't understand. I have a HTPC which plays everything available on my local network server. I don't follow what this is going to fix or do for me. Thanks.

Streamtome already does stream to your iPhone when outside your house.

Streamtome being able to use AirPlay now means that you don't have to be near your computer and you don't have to transcode your videos and import them to iTunes in order to play them on your Apple TV. All video because Streamtome live transcodes.

AirPlay is cool for exactly the reasons most people have thought of already. You can be watching something on your phone and a friend wants to see so you just send it to your Apple TV so you can all watch it. YouTube at parties is always a "Hey, have you seen this cute kitten video?" Now it's that much easier to show everyone else on a much bigger screen.

Can someone please explain to me how they were able to get this in the App Store? iOS 4.3 as well as the SDK is still in beta.

It is crazy. Right now you can send audio only from an iOS device to an airport extreme via airplay and watch the video on the device. On a Mac you cannot do this. Either video + audio only to appletv or audio from audio source only to appletv or airport express.

And while we're at it, will we see small developers mac apps for the mac app store to do things with airplay? Perhaps someone would like to stream audio from their usb turntable all over the house.

It's not so much what it can do today, but what this will enable: Multi screen apps. Different content for the better suited screen.

Imagine the CNN app for example. You'll be able to read the news on your iPad while video of the story is playing on your TV. Reading is best done in front of you, a couple of feet away at most. Video is better suited to large screens. AirPlay will allow apps to take advantage of both.

Here's an interesting scenario that is made possible with AirPlay: Mom walks into the living room where Dad and the kids are watching a tv show. "I have a couple of options for dinner" says mom. She opens the Jamie Oliver cooking app. She turns on AirPlay and swipes her iPhone while everybody watches the different recipes on the tv screen.

Mom leaves and the kids go back to watching the show they were watching. An actor pops up and Dad says: "Hey, isn't that Greg who used to live down the street?" Dad goes on the iMdB app and pushes it to the screen so everybody can review the movies he's been in and his bio, showing that he was born in their home town.

The kids ask Dad if everybody can go to the movies after dinner. They pull up the Fandango app and push the content to the TV and they review options, buy the tickets and head back to the kitchen. Mom has her iPhone off to the side and is AirPlaying the Jamie Kennedy app's content to the AirPlay compatible fridge tv. She calls out "Next" and "Previous" to control the recipe slides without having to grease the iPhone's screen.

Dinner's ready and Dad puts some jazzy music on his iPhone and streams it to the dining room.

This is a significant technology strategy for Apple. It'll put them in the living room with the iOS devices that everybody already owns. It gets over the problem he talked about @ "All Things D" -- "How do you compete in the living room if cable companies are giving away DVR boxes for free? People aren't going to buy our box if they get one for free" -- You transform existing iOS devices into "living room boxes"... wireless ones.

Been loving my appletv 2....hopefully when IOS 4.3 comes out in feb....I will love it even more...maybe even buy another one for my other HDTV!

The helicopter game rocks! Hopefully it will support Airplay\Video in the near future....with an AppleTV.

Apple we need apps on the AppleTV 2 and ASAP!!

IOS 5.0????

Hopefully!

I think this is an error. Apple is not accepting iOS4.3 apps from developers yet because the firmware is still in beta and we need the golden master to submit apps.
Probably this app is slipped through the review process OR its "what's new" section is simply incorrect.

I'm still waiting for the ability to sit at my desk, work unencumbered on my 27" imac, and have my ipad sitting slightly off to one side playing a netflix movie, while my imac plays the audio over its nice bigger speakers.

Shouldn't be too hard.

I want this in the MLB At Bat app this year. That would be great.

I would really love an MLB At Bat app on the Apple TV if Apple decides to give us apps on it this year, but I'll settle for Airplay.

It might not do *anything* for you. It depends on how you use your iPhone/iPad etc. I spent Christmas at my parents. Before getting on the plane, I'd loaded a handful of movies onto my phone for my 3 year old. My parents have an ATV, so I was able to stream directly their TV. It was pure convenience.

I also use airplay to play youtube music to speakers throughout my house (useful for old underground stuff I never found on vinyl).

My brother in law also has an iPhone. The only time he's ever used airplay is at my house, but then, I don't need or want a 7 seater SUV, whereas he wouldn't buy anything smaller.
