There are more than 2.35 billion active iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other Apple devices worldwide, Apple CEO Tim Cook said today in the earnings call covering the first fiscal quarter of 2025.

2.35 billion active devices is a new record for Apple. Apple last shared its active install base numbers in February 2024, when the company had 2.2 billion active devices worldwide.

Apple did not provide numbers for individual devices, but Apple has long had more than a billion active iPhones worldwide.

What counts as a device I wonder?

Are AirPods included?
I had the same question and thinking about it a little more, since they update the firmware on AirPods via the "internet" I am thinking that AirPods are included in that number.
So my guess of the various products beyond what is listed in the article (Mac, iPhone, iPad):
Apple watch
apple TV
homepods
airpods
VPro
???

Active device is anything that you can sign with your Apple account on it.
AirPods and AirTags are not included.
HomePods are.

You can see what is included, going to Settings either on Mac, iPad, iPhone, then Apple Account > Devices.

Now you really have me questioning these numbers.

I just went in there on my iPhone and they have nine devices still in my account that I can’t seem to get rid of that are old and I haven’t been using for years

You can try going to https://account.apple.com/account/manage/section/devices and delete them from there.
Be cautious about deleting any stolen device, as this would inadvertently provide the thieves with access to it.

yet when you go to the support app, under My Devices - AirPods are listed.
So, to me, it remains questionable what devices really count

That's correct, however I believe that the device (to be called "active") needs to have direct internet connectivity.
While the AirPods can receive firmware updates, they need to be connected to an iPhone/iPad/Mac to do so.

the same applies to a non-cellular Apple Watch ... and most people never have to sign on the actual watch, so ...

Apple Watch has WiFi radio since the first model, thus is capable of direct internet access.
Apple saved you of type your Apple Account credentials by transferring it from the iPhone, but it's signed-in.
Same with HomePods.

that is true. So it should be any device with a direct internet connection

At first I was like ‘that’s 25% of the people on the planet’. But then realized that the hubby and I have 11 13 (i forgot the watches) active Apple devices in our apartment. And 3 in our vacation place. So….big number but perhaps not so big penetration.

I’m still ecstatic about the number. A perhaps-too-large portion of my net worth/retirement is tied up in Apple stock. Keep going kids.

That number is staggering no matter how it is figured. The potential support at that scale is crazy.
