There are more than two billion active iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other Apple devices worldwide, Apple said today in the earnings report covering the first fiscal quarter of 2023.

During the December quarter, we achieved a major milestone and are excited to report that we now have more than 2 billion active devices as part of our growing installed base," said Apple CEO Tim Cook. Two billion active devices is a new record for the company. Apple last shared its active install base in January 2022, when the company had 1.8 billion active devices worldwide.

Apple did not provide numbers for individual devices, but Apple has long had more than a billion active iPhones worldwide.

The stingy 256GB SSD (single chip also limiting R/W bandwidth) 8GB base spec of M2 Macs along with exorbitant upgrade prices can’t be helping on the Mac side of business.
8GB RAM & 256GB SSD for base models started in 2012. It's time for an upgrade 11 years later.

Below is the specs of standard Mac SKUs. I doubled the RAM & SSD but kept the same price, SoC, CPU cores & GPU cores.

Note:

*If RAM & SSD were increased my choice would be the $1299 Mac mini M2 Pro if there was no iMac 27" replacement & the $2499 MBP 16" M2 Pro. Both of which would have 32GB RAM & 1TB SSD.

**My guess on the CPU core & GPU core count of the future 2023 Mac Studio M2 Max & M2 Ultra SKUs.

***iPhone chip-based Mac. If M1 & M2 can be used in an iPad Pro & iPad Air why not use iPhone chip in a cheap laptop & desktop? "Mac nano" uses the 2022 Apple TV 4K enclosure as to make it 0.27L instead of 1.39L of the Mac mini. This reduces shipping cost as you can pack in more "Mac nano" per shipping pallet.

I’m disappointing that the Mac sales are still low despite massive advances, but people out there have been suffering high living costs and fighting over trays of eggs so we can’t ask for much.
To be honest, the big cycle driving upgrade adoption from covid has passed, and the portion of people actively needing full desktops is shrinking (many people can accomplish their computing needs with a tablet or phone). The sectors that are staying level or growing are more advanced users, such as creative and scientific industries, and to a lesser extent, gaming.

I’ll be honest, I would have thought they had 1.5B in the US alone. 2B devices seems low?

How do they know how many active devices there is? I wonder if my iBook G3 clamshell and my iMac G3 count as active devices.🤔

If they still call back to Apple's servers actively for a Software Update or passively to say "hello" then they're counted.

You remind me of these less than half a dozen devs, engineers, scientists or other related professionals who all think that more than 50% of all worldwide users of more than 100 million Macs know how to look for Terminal.app for the Command Line Interface.

At most it would be less than 20%.

Assuming most of the forced upgrades occured in 2020/2021 then

- per Apple's 4 year replacement cycle that will recur next by 2024-2025
- per Intel's 5-6 year replacement cycle that will recur next by 2025-2027
- per me's after final macOS Security Update 7-10 year replacement cycle that will recur next by 2027-2031
- per OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OLPC) users replacement cycle will recur... into the 2040s.

I'm sure Mac sales are up with Apple Silicon. Mac sales will never equal Windows PC sales just because of the $200 Walmart PC. Apple will never make an all plastic cheap as could be MacBook.

Apple customers are largely inelastic and they can afford

- smartphones priced between $429-1599
- laptops that start at $999
- desktops that start at $599
- smartwatches
- wireless earphones
- other quality of life improvements

Also China's hard COVID lockdowns disrupted many supply chains that pass through China. It caused a lot of delayed production and a reason why Apple is relocating their operations to more stable and economical Vietnam, India and other places.

The peak laptop/desktop replacements occurred in 2020 with spillover in 2021-2022. 2023 would not be as good as the last 3 years.
