Apple today began selling refurbished versions of the fourth-generation iPad Air for the first time since the tablet was initially released in October 2020.

The fourth-generation iPad Air introduced an all-display design, an array of different colors for the body, and a Touch ID Home button. It featured an A14 chip, the same chip that was used in the iPhone 12 lineup.

Apple has several different iPad Air 4 models available for purchase in 64 and 256GB capacities. 64GB models are priced at $469, which Apple says is an $80 savings over the $549 standard price, and the 256GB models are priced at $599, a $100 savings. It's worth noting that the iPad Air 4 was priced at $599 for the 64GB model and $729 for the 256GB version, so Apple is listing pricing that was not technically available. There are multiple color options for each capacity, including silver, sky blue, green, rose gold, and space gray, but stock is limited and will fluctuate.

Refurbished iPads are sold with the same one-year warranty that's provided with a brand new device, along with all manuals and accessories. Refurbished devices go through a rigorous testing, repair, repackaging, and cleaning process that makes them nearly identical to new devices.

(Thanks, Michael!)

I’ve noticed the recent iPads are really lagging on when they hit the refurb store. The 2021 iPad Pros haven’t shown up either, while the new MacBook Pros hit last month.

iPad sales aren’t lagging, so I’m not sure if it’s a reflection of fewer people returning units, or Apple needing to hold more back for service stock.

Amazing. I paid $800 for a iPad Pro with 1TB 2 years ago at B&H and now present day they want almost $500 for an iPad Air with just 64GB of storage.

Poor value, for $80 more, get a brand new current version with M1/8GB.

Virtually everyone is eligible for the edu discount.
Apple says it’s available to “Available to current and newly accepted college students and their parents, as well as faculty, staff, and homeschool teachers of all grade levels.” That definitely doesn’t include me and is pretty far from “virtually everyone.”

I just don't know how you couldn't or wouldn't pay for an M1 ipad air at this point. If you order from Apple Education Store, it's $80 more. I foresee at least a couple of years of longer support with the M1 over A14.

You aren't homeschooling your kids on any particular subject at all? I know I'm always teaching my kids through conversation at the dinner table.

There's no definition or even certification for a homeschool teacher. You could be homeschooling a 9-year old across the street or across the country via Zoom. You could be a parent (whether or not you're aware of) to a student attending higher education.

This is the norm for iPads and iPhones. They don't sell refurbs until the next model is released.

I expect this decision is primarily profit-driven. Apple wants customers to pay full price for brand new products. Not discounted pricing for refurbs.

That’s not what “homeschool teacher” means, and we all know it. Now, if you’re suggesting that you can get away with claiming the discount because they’re not going to check then I agree with you. But I consider that unethical and wouldn’t do it.

How do we "all know it"? Apple could have easily defined what is a "homeschool teacher" in a few sentences, but they don't. That's the whole point of the terms and conditions document.

Given Apple has a $1B annual legal budget but they don't write a single sentence about it, their intentions are clear with regards to eligibility.

how long until the air 5 is available under the EPP discount program?
There is no expiration date. It’s likely whenever Apple removes and adds the newest model. Not only that, but they can manually override the discount if you request a senior advisor.

“Homeschool teacher of any grade level” means you are actually teaching a kid at home in lieu of that kid going to school. Your reading would make any parent eligible, and if that’s what they meant, they would have said so. Anyone who wants to pretend otherwise to get a few bucks off an iPad can go right ahead.

So you’ve never used an online promo code more than once? Man, ethics just oozes from you.

That is a terrible deal. I got mine for a similar price one a deal with my telco, so same price but mine is cellular.

Edit: I also got it before the 5 was announced!
