The M4 Pro version of the Mac mini that Apple introduced today uses the latest Thunderbolt 5 technology with transfer speeds of up to 120Gb/s, which means Apple is selling a new Thunderbolt 5 cable to go along with it.

Priced at $69, the new 1 meter Thunderbolt 5 Pro Cable supports Thunderbolt 5 data transfers at the maximum speed, but it is also backward compatible with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB 4, and USB 3. The cable has a braided design for durability purposes, and it is black like prior Thunderbolt cables that Apple has offered.

Apple's new Thunderbolt 5 cable supports up to 240W charging, and it offers DisplayPort 2.1 video output. It is designed to connect displays and other devices to the new M4 Mac mini models and the upcoming MacBook Pro models that we expect to see introduced tomorrow.

The M4 Pro Mac mini supports Thunderbolt 5, which means M4 Pro and M4 Max versions of the MacBook Pro will as well, but it is compatible with all of Apple's USB-C devices. The cable is ideal for connecting the Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, Thunderbolt docks, and external drives.

I remember one Youtuber (Rene Ritchie?) said they threw away all their cables and just got the latest standard so there would be no confusion. My current thunderbolt and USB-C. Apple even said the USB-C cable they include with the iPhone is good for charging but if you want fast transfers, you have get a better cable from someone else. That is so confusing!

Maybe google thunderbolt 5 cables before commenting. This really isn't that outrageous.

$33 for 1m, with an extra 10% off coupon available.

Yes, $69 is absolutely outrageous.

Oh, and it's even marked with a 5 so you can tell it apart from your other cables.

Ah yes from well renowned brand Cable Matters , I'm sure that will absolutely be in spec. (just to be clear, it won't).

Now look up the prices from reputable brands and not rando Chinese that'll cut corners in the spec.
You know they're ALL made in China, right?

It would be one thing if Apple's double-priced cable was US production, but it isn't, it's Chinese.

And in case you're wondering, Cable Matters is based in Massachusetts. So the same as Apple, a technically US company with China production.

Oh good, they look identical to my braided Thunderbolt 4 cables. This should be fun. Thanks Apple.
This has been the same for HDMI for years, although Thunderbolt often will have a number on the cable to let you know if it is a 3 vs 4 and I would guess 5 as well

As usual, Apple is charging ridiculous prices for cables.

No thanks, I'll do what I always do and ONLY buy 3rd party.

You've got to be nuts to pay Apple price for a cable.

OWC is charging $40 for their non-braided Thunderbolt 5 cable.

That is usually about how much I can get the Apple ones for. I mean I just purchased an Apple Thunderbolt 4 cable last month for $28, and those also retail from Apple for $69. Just have to look for sales.

I am pretty sure I read that Apple’s 1m Thunderbolt 4 Cables will support Thunderbolt 5. The passive Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 cables are the same. It is only the active Thunderbolt 4 cables that are not compatible with Thunderbolt 5.

I agree. I wish there is a reliable brand on Amazon. I guess maybe OWC cables are good and compatible like Apple Cables?
