Apple today launched a new offer that provides owners of the second-generation AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and select Beats products with a six-month free subscription to Apple Music.

The offer is only valid for new Apple Music subscribers, and no new purchase is required, so this is open to any users who currently own an eligible product. Eligible products include the second-generation AirPods (with wired or wireless case), AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, Beats Studio Buds, Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Solo Pro. Eligible users will see a prompt in the Apple Music app for their six-month free offer.

The offer must be claimed within 90 days from when users first connect their eligible AirPods or Beats product to an Apple device after September 20 to take up the offer.

Apple emphasizes that customers must be on the latest iOS and iPadOS versions to see the offer, which as of yesterday, is iOS and iPadOS 15. The new offer is a notable package from Apple, as it's not often the company has bundled the purchase of its AirPods or Beats products with its Apple Music service.

More information about the offer can be found on Apple's website.

Update: This article has been updated to clarify that no new purchase of an AirPods or Beats product is required. Customers who previously purchased an eligible product are also able to take advantage of the offer.

I’m not a fan of this kind of offer. 6 months isn’t a trial, it’s a substantial value. But only being available to new customers means it’s an effective price increase, or value decrease, for older customers. Reminds me of dodgy mobile phone companies who say screw our loyal customers here’s improved rates but only for new customers. Not a good look IMO.

Wait! What? How is Apple Music price increase? or value decrease? You can't play a song you used to play?

Tbh, bought my Powerbeats Pro a few months back, was pretty surprised to see this offer popping up this morning.

In terms of the ecosystem cost. They did a similar thing with Apple TV, 1 free year of TV+ when it was new, now no TV+. On the other hand at least TV+ subscriptions would stack not just lock out people who already had a trial.

The next step along this path would be Apple offering something like 1TB of free iCloud for a year for new iPhone users, but nothing if you’ve had an iPhone before. Again not technically a price increase but a clear value discrimination for different customers paying the same price.

I bought the Beats Studio Buds last month and I’ve been subscribed to Apple Music - Do I get any free months out of this?
For other free trials offering four months to new subscribers, I can still get a month free.

For anyone interested, I had subbed to Apple Music about 3 years ago. When I logged in, I was offered two months to come back. This is despite having two eligible devices in the list. So it's for new subscribers only, not returning customers.

I was interested to try the spatial audio features.

Because Apple Music 6 months is not free. The service cost is bundled with the hardware cost. Existing customers are now paying for Apple Music both as part of their subscription and as part of a hardware purchase.

But the hardware cost is not changing. Which means it was not directly calculated into the hardware cost.

Probably comes from the advertisement budget, which i guess comes from every apple product or service.
But feels like a better investment than a TV commercial where none of us gets anything from it.

The idea is nice, but if you are already paying for that, you are missing a "discount".

Everyone had an opportunity for (at least) one free Apple Music subscription for X months. When Apple Music first launched, they gave everyone a free 3 month trial. They then extended that offer for another month to prior trial users when the service didn't catch on.

This offer is for those who never activated a free Apple Music trial before.

I still have my free 3 month trial because I never activated it which means I qualify for this 6 month free trial.

If you (or any existing Apple Music subscriber) used the free trial already, then you got yours. So why are you complaining? They're not giving anyone who took advantage of a prior free trial offer anything extra.

If you are really bothered by this, just create a new Apple user account with a new email address. Rinse and repeat as many times as you'd like.

The things people complain about...

So if I become a new user (new Apple ID) the offer will come automatically? Interesting! And when the new Apple ID later joins the family, then also the other family members can enjoy, even if they have taken the trial some time ago?

For maximum privacy it is always good to close your Apple-google-microsoft account or ID once in a while and open a new one so all the data gathered about you becomes useless.

there is a trial available for returning subscribers in the itunes ios app. I got 3 months. Still amazes me how bad an an app/experience it is compared to Spotify.

No, the MSRP hardware cost didn't change, but the combined value did. Two different people pay the same amount for the hardware but they can get different values from the combined product and services. Adding value to purchase is an alternative, but comparable strategy to simply putting the item on sale.

Excluding access to the extra value is the equivalent of saying only new customers can get the sale price. Which, I interpreted as the original commenter's point.

Yes, but this is a response to the comment that 'new customers' is an artificial limitation that can be perceived as inappropriate. Since the cost of the six months is associated with a purchase it is reasonable that if one buys two pairs of AirPods they have paid for 12 months of Apple Music, or 18 months if they purchased three pairs.

I wonder why it’s showing up now bought my airpods 2 this time last year and its now in my settings.

I don’t see any unusual increase in price for Apple hardwares.

Well, promotion happens since forever. I hope when you buy one thing and people buy the same thing cheaper one year late you wouldn’t think too much of it like this. It’s just what it is in consumerism.
Sone people happens to have Apple Music for free 3 months more than me? Big deal. I have enjoyed it for years while they haven’t.
