Apple stores are replacing (not repairing) iphones with the "unresponsive band on screen" issue. My iphone was pretty scratched up, so it's nice to have a fresh one under warranty.

Also interesting that the service stock replacement phones are pre-activated (the store employee said "unlocked", but I haven't tried another SIMM card). So they just put your SIMM into the replacement phone and you walk out of the store with your shinny new phone making/receiving calls.

Several other people were at the Genius Bar having their iphones replaced for the same issue, so the problem seems common.
