While last month's version 5.0 update to the official Apple Store iOS app introduced several significant changes to the user experience, one thing Apple has retained is its tradition of occasionally offering select paid apps for free through the app for a limited time.

Right now, users who scroll down the Discover tab should find an option to download monochromatic platform puzzler Starman: Tale of Light for free, rather than paying $3.99 to download it from the App Store.

starman-1-800x369.jpg

Originally released in 2017, this serene title uses a level design reminiscent of Monument Valley, with the player encountering a series of easy to moderately difficult puzzles as they progress through each scene. Optimized for iPhone X displays, Starman currently has an average 4.8 star rating out of 769 App Store reviews, and is described in the official Apple Store app as follows:
In this visually stunning game with breathtaking architectural scenery, you guide Starman through delicate atmospheres and solve elaborate puzzles. No two puzzles are ever the same, so the challenges are always new. Soothing music and haptic feedback enhance the immersive experience further.

To download the app for free, tap on the featured app in the Discover section of the Apple Store app, tap Download now for free, and you will be redirected to the App Store's Redeem code screen. Your free redeem code should already be entered - all you need to do is tap Redeem in the upper right corner to begin downloading the game.

The offer to download Starman for free through the Apple Store iOS app expires on July 15, 2018. Note that free app offers sometimes vary from region to region.

(Thanks, Sergio!)

If you already have the Apple Store app installed, you can change the country by tapping the small Account icon in the top right corner and selecting Settings -> Country from the view that appears. Choose United States and you can install the app from Discovery tap.

Where is the “Discovery Tab”?!?!? I’ve looked on my iPhone and iPad and don’t see anything.

A little help anyone?

Thanks!

One of the two developers here!

Just one thing: the game is meant to be an experience, so try not to rush it; take your time, turn the volume up, and enjoy its atmosphere and pace. We think that's the best way to approach it :)

We hope you like it!

You know a game is good when you see a developer being afraid that people will just rush through it without enjoying what he created.

How often does  give free apps on the Apple Store app? Anyone knows?

Killing the free app of the week was a huge disappointment. I’ve collected more than a few gems through the years. In many cases, it can do wonders for developers leading to more revenue due to more exposure. Goat simulator, notability, pdf expert, dark echo, printer pro, djay, scanner pro, badlands and lots of games and photo apps. Also miss the free apps and songs from those Starbucks cards but that was killed off a long time ago. I just found out that they kept it going but through the Starbucks app which I’ve never used. They ended that last year from what I’ve read.

Thanks! Will give it a go tonight. It’s refreshing to see quality games made for the right reasons not as a vehicle to profit from micro transactions which became the norm when Apple introduced iAP. Not only did iAP lead to freemium becoming the dominant mobile game model but it also resulted in many classic paid iOS games being retroactively ruined with the introduction of microtransactions. Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Bejeweled 2, Real Racing, Plants vs. Zombies, every sports game, Dungeon Hunter, Doodle Jump.

Apple should really create a top list for games without iAP both paid and f2p. There are so many people that would be willing to pay a higher price for a quality experience. I barely even look for new games because they are 99% pay to win. Why would people spend as much or more than what an actual console game costs? I bought Bloodborne (best PS4 game hands down) and Resident Evil 7 for $20 each. Full AAA experiences. They both offer DLC but it’s optional and fairly priced. I’ve never had anything against expansion packs. They have a long history on the PC and lots of them delivered some of the best experiences I’ve ever had gaming. Sometimes better than the main game. The Frozen Throne for WC3 is still one of the best games ever. All of the expansions for HL and HL2 also offered extremely satisfying content.

That's really nice, thank you so much! Not many people think about that, so I really appreciate it :)

P.S. I also speak on behalf of my brother, the other developer involved ;)

Installed now by following the instructions. Thanks so much for these tips, they’re really helpful.

I LOVE these kind of games ... unfortunately this game is $5.99 in Canadian App Store. I'll wait until Friday and will purchase it.

Many thanks for creating this app and contributing to this thread. I LOVE these types of games and will be looking for others from your team in the future - paying of course. I like quality apps and immersive gaming experiences. These are just a few of my favourite things on iOS and keeps me on this platform.

Again thank you. Hopefully Apple pays's the bill fully with each redeem code. Actually are you at liberty to explain how this works when Apple offers it for free? Did they or you engage either first?

the article above says the app is free until 15 july. today 11 april, the app is $3.99. this is months ahead of the quoted date. i am in new york, or rather, usa, the biggest market for this app.

did you just randomly make up a date that says the app would be free until?
