Apple OLED supplier Samsung Display will start manufacturing OLED panels for the iPhone 15 series a month earlier than planned due to production problems with one of Apple's other suppliers, according to a new report out of Korea.

According to The Elec, Samsung will now begin manufacturing the OLED panels in May instead of June to compensate for the lack of planned initial orders from BOE, which is having problems with light leakage around the portion of the OLED display where the pill and hole cutouts secure the space necessary for the TrueDepth camera and Face ID.

Apple gave the order to Chinese partner BOE to manufacture some OLED panels for the standard model of iPhone 15, but the issues appear to have been so entrenched that Apple has dropped the order, and BOE has now missed its chance to become one of the initial suppliers.

Samsung was always slated to also supply the OLED panel for the standard model of iPhone 15, but now will start production early in light of the Chinese display panel maker's problems.

The standard and Plus iPhone 15 models are set to use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT), suggesting that the devices will continue to lack ProMotion support and an always-on display option like Apple's Pro models have.

Meanwhile, LG Display will start producing LTPO TFT OLED panels aimed at the higher-tier models of iPhone 15 in June. The LPTO panels feature 120Hz ProMotion support and a 1Hz refresh rate capability that enables an idle Lock Screen to stay visible without significantly impacting battery.

Samsung's early start doesn't necessarily mean the end for BOE as an Apple supplier, according to the report. The Chinese display panel maker is reportedly showing progress in solving the light leak issue, and could start supplying OLED panels for iPhone 15 within the year.

The iPhone 15 series is expected to arrive in September, as usual. For everything we know about the new models, be sure to check out our dedicated roundups by clicking the links below.

Every year it's the same story with BOE and every year Apple keeps going back to them and then no doubt having to pay top dollar, when they inevitably go back to Samsung 😏

At this point I believe that BOE is actually owned by Samsung, and keeps producing defective displays just in order to convince Apple to no jump ship 🤷🏻‍♂️

BOE is a Chinese company and Samsung is a Korean company, they have no relation. Apple under Tim Cook will always bring in competition to lower costs in the supply chain. BOE will be getting 100% of the 2024 iPhone SE orders.

Hopefully this means there won't be a shortage at launch. I'd like to order a phone one year without panicking that it will go through in milliseconds. Yes, I know... first world problems.
Waiting a few months anyways is probably not a bad idea either. Usually that's when all the QA issues are sorted out and discounts start appearing.

With the way Apple has been throwing around 1 billion dollars to things that don't seem directly related to its cash cow iPhone business, I wish they'd cut this particular practice out and go with the reliable top quality manufacturer. Nobody wants to keep playing the component lottery with every iphone purchase.

The beauty of being valued over a trillion with over 200 billion cash on hand (last check) is that you can toss a billion here and there and see what works.

What works, as Steve Jobs well knew, was putting out a product that "just works". But more and more we get little things cropping up as a result of putting up with less than the best components. So Apple can save a few pennies while charging us a premium price for less than the best that we could have gotten otherwise, like the whole Intel modem misery that plagued consumers for years. Then there was the year people were hoping to NOT get a particular Samsung component and desperately hoped for the better performing, more battery efficient one made by TMSC.

At some point you do get what you pay for. Apple needs to pay for quality components sometimes.

BOE isn't just struggling, like a lot of Chinese suppliers have done with other corporate customers, they were caught trying to subvert Apple's standards.

When is Apple going to say "enough is enough". If they have a billion to spare, surely they can make a call like this.

This means BOE is quickly catching up to industry leaders. Note that there is no viable competitor in North America.
