Apple has once again delayed the opening of its first physical retail store in India, The Economic Times reports.

The store was originally planned to open in 2021, but the global health crisis and economic uncertainty forced Apple to delay the opening. Now, Apple has decided to delay the launch until early 2023, with today's report saying the company is aiming for a launch between the January and March timeframe. The store in Mumbai is set to be 22,000 square feet and will be a "landmark" store known for its iconic design.

Apple is also planning a second, smaller store in New Delhi that will measure 10,000-12,000 square feet. Beyond those two stores, Apple is also looking at other possible locations in malls and high-end shopping districts across India with the intent of making retail a large part of its presence in the country.

In 2020 Apple opened its online store in India, offering Indian customers a direct way to purchase products directly from Apple without having to go through an authorized premium reseller. Apple executives have repeatedly stressed the importance of the Indian market. Most notably, Apple began production of the iPhone 13 in the country earlier this year.

I think this may be a political and pressure decision given the context as yesterday was some events happening related to India.

Don’t mean to throw discussion into that direction, but it’s something that came into my mind.

The average Indian will have to work 724 hours—around 90 days—to afford the iPhone 13, compared to 50 hours for the average US worker. Let’s see how it goes.

The world economy does not work that way. I mean based in average. If the market is huge enough , even a top 5 percent means huge amount of revenue pool. Why should apple miss the fastest or second fastest large economy in the world.

China has about the same number of people as India, and an average Chinese worker only needs to work 227 hours to afford the iPhone 13.

I'm sure both current and mid term growth in India allows for say the top 20-30% of the population to afford Apple products, specially those working in tech and living in big cities. That 20-30% would make for a larger market than the whole of the US. Sure, there might be 70-80% of consumers left out ATM but the numbers are just on a different scale, especially if you count all the tiny markets in Europe where Apple has presence since forever.

What I’m also very interested in knowing is when they plan to launch online books Store (paid books) & ApplePay in India. Not sure what’s taking Apple so long while likes of Amazon, Samsung launched these services long back!

There's no true Apple store in New Zealand either, but then a lot of our major tech stores pretty much cover what they would sell anyway.

India has never been as business friendly as China
That's relative.
China is not necessarily friendly to foreign businesses either. They have strict import laws and customs, and they are not too concerned in protecting foreign companies' intellectual properties. And current lockdowns are ruining a lot of businesses outside China.

India has its own characteristics and issues. But if Japanese companies can handle it (after a lot of growing pains), I'm sure western companies can.

The funny thing is, Indian government is currently cracking down on the Chinese companies like Xiaomi and the BBK group for their tax evasion. Honor just pulled out before they got to them.. :D

Apple going down their list on the largest market potentials (by population) in the world. First China, second India. Come on Apple, 4th is Indonesia, and you don't even have actual presence here yet.

I am sure Indonesia is in their plans. It's a decent market, and iPhone penetration is increasing in Indonesia.

Too much risk for long term business. India will become the first of the big nations to suffer a massive ecological collapse . It will start with the river systems being so dirty and dry. Even 20 years ago it was in such a bad state the marine life in the rivers were dead. In the name of free market capitalism India adopted all the worst habits of the western developed nations - deregulation, unregulation, and don’t give a damn about nature.

The people with money there they haggle for everything. Hardly ever wanting to pay full price. Once I went with my millionaire uncle and his family to the cinema and they all tried to smuggle themselves inside for free. They want things for free, haggle down like mad and at the same time using real deal slaves in the house, in the street and at work.

So shameful and I’ll never go back there. They tried to manipulate me into arranged marriage when I was young and I said no I only like East Asian girls especially from Hong Kong and Gangnam. That pissed them off so much 🤣😂

Average wages is useless number.
There are lot of rich people in India who can afford Apple products.
you have to look at % of people working in tech industry, median wages of engineers working in tech industry.
