Apple's online stores went down for several hours earlier today, and while the downtime did not bring any new products, it did see a few visible changes for the stores.

One immediately visible change is in the iPad model selection page, where Apple previously listed all 18 iPad 2 models available in the U.S. store. The company has replaced that system with a new, more dynamic process in which users first select a color, followed by a separate step in which they select a storage capacity and whether they wish to have 3G capacity. Users selecting a 3G model then proceed to a third step where they select whether they want an AT&T (GSM) or Verizon (CDMA) model.

The change significantly reduces clutter on the selection page, where the sheer number of model choices led to potentially confusing mass of selection buttons. The new stepwise selection process streamlines the selection page while making it clear to customers the three criteria (color, capacity, connectivity) they need to decide upon.

In another change, Apple has replaced its previous "within 24 hours" shipping estimate status with a new "in stock" indicator on a store-wide basis. The two terms appear to be synonymous, with models offering longer shipping estimates continuing to list their availability in terms of business days until shipping.

Shipping estimates throughout Apple's online store mysteriously ballooned yesterday before returning to normal after a few hours. The issue may have been related to behind-the-scenes changes being made in preparation for today's tweaks to the store.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

Or... maybe Apple wanted to remove the shipping estimates to keep a tighter lid on the upcoming release of iPhone 5 and future product releases. No more shipping estimate speculation!

Edit: Nevermind, I still see shipping estimates still around. iPhone 4 unlocked is showing 1-2 business days, Thunderbolt display is showing 2-3 weeks, and MBAs are showing 1-4 business days depending on configuration.

That was my first thought as well. Maybe they're just prepping the site, and gonna do an overhaul with the release of the next iFizzle

Kind of sucks that they dont have a shipping estimate anymore. I don't care for the stupid rumors that speculate product updates when that changes, but it's more for the customer who wants to gauge when he might receive the item ordered.

I found the estimates weren't very accurate anyway. When I ordered my macbook pro I was told it would be dispatched in 3-5 days. I received it the day after ordering!
Anyway I presume you would still get an estimate of delivery once you place the order.

Did you read the article? There are still shipping estimates when it's not 'immediately'.

the only estimate that changed is the "1 day" to "in stock". When in stock, it obviously means it's ready to dispatch and arrive imediately (1 day).

I wish they give 128GB as an option next time with iPad 3. With closed design like iPad (no attachable secondary storages), they need more room.

16GB is a joke when a HD movie is a few GB each.

You got there first!

Upon seeing the new layout, my first thought was "simplify" - so Apple! ;)

Now if they could figure out how to make a two dimensional presentation thinner.

What Apple really needs to do is make sure they're website doesn't crash on preorder day for the iPhone 5.

This is stunning, earth-shattering, significant news! Thanks to macrumors for highlighting this.

Such an improvement in content layout. The page before was so cluttered, my eyes hurt just looking at that mess. I look forward to website updates by Apple. They lead the industry not only in product design but lead in web design as well. I find their work increasingly inspirational. Keep up the great work Apple. More companies should catch on to your web presence, it's the best.

Some are so easily impressed by simple basic organization. There's nothing brilliant going on here. A few logical changes and people fawn over Apple like they're some devine spirit. Perhaps they are :)
