apple_store_mtz_opening.jpg

As noted by iFun.de [Google translation], Apple will be hosting a grand opening for its eighth German store this Thursday, November 17th. The new MTZ retail store is located in the Main-Taunus-Zentrum shopping mall in Sulzbach outside of Frankfurt, and is part of a significant expansion of the mall.

Apple made a significant push to open approximately 30 stores during the third calendar quarter of 2011, but in line with the company's usual practice of having new stores up and running well in advance of the holiday shopping season, openings have since slowed to a trickle.

Sulsbach is near Frankfurt am Main...

Sulsbach isn't anywhere near the French boarder, it's a suburb of Frankfurt am Main, where they already have a store, which gets really crowded (I've been there, trust me), so this is good! :apple:

There a town called like that in Saarbrücken. But that would be another zip code. :)

Check your geography

The Main-Taunus Zentrum in just north of Saarbrücken and about 15 kilometers from the French border. Not quite part of the Frankfurt area!

Hahahaha!

If you don't know the area, don't argue.... Main-Taunus-Zentrum tells you it is on the river Main (like Frankfurt) and close to the mountain range of the Taunus (north of Frankfurt) and the MTZ is a well-known shopping area in Sulzbach, right out of Frankfurt/Main. :p

PS: ZIP codes starting 65 are in Hassia - Hassia does not have any borders with France - only other German states... but from an American perspective ALL of Germany is close to France since Germany is only half the size of Texas.

No, no, no.. you're all wrong...

The new Apple will be in Sübeßtrussenfrikenßoshen, which is south of Frankfurt, 3 killometres ünd 3.67 metres from the French border. I've been there, many times. My aunt Helga has a bier shop der. :D

What the hell are you talking about? You obviously have no idea of German geography.

Thanks guys...too many Sulzbachs and not enough paying attention on my part. Fixed.

Hey my aunt's name is Helga too and she lives in a small town outside of Frankfurt (again, American perspective, if you drive 3 hours from one end of Los Angeles to the other, you tend to see distances differently).

Small world. :apple:

But really, it's not anywhere near the French boarder or Saarbruecken at all.

What is a bit strange about this is that the new MTZ store will be only about 20 minutes by car from Apple's downtown Frankfurt store. Granted, this shopping center is strategically located between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden/ Mainz, and sits in the middle of a very affluent area. Neverthess, I find it odd for Apple to be opening its second Rhein-Main store when many other sizable German cities (including Berlin!) have yet to see a store (though to be fair, one is apparently planned for Berlin's Kurfürstendamm soon).

I don't get it.
Now the Frankfurt area has 2 Apple Stores, 14km apart. Why?

Now, look around and where the money is: There is Kronberg and Koenigstein, two of the wealthiest cities in Germany. That is where the Albecht brothers live and used to live. Two families of Forbes top ten billionaires. I went to High School in Bad Homburg (close by). Believe me - Apple invests where the money is opening a store there. The movie theater (Kinopolis) there at the MTZ is a magnet for the whole area and when the Christmas shopping starts, they offer shuttle buses because their multiple deck parking garage cannot hold the visitors.

But, but...
It almost takes you 3 hours to get from one end of Frankfurt to the other, too! At least it feels that way! :)

All of what you say is true, however I still think that "the money" from the Hochtaunuskreis is more likely to be shopping on Goethestrasse in Frankfurt (near the Apple Store) than at MTZ, so this move still seems a bit redundant to me. In fact, MTZ is a rather "pedestrian" mall without many high-end stores, at least by US standards, so I don't really see that it fits Apple's image so well. And given the crowding you mention, going to MTZ is no less a PITA than going into Frankfurt!
