Apple's return policy is much better. The only reason to go to VZW for the purchase would be that you may be able to get the activation/renewal fee waived.

My rule of thumb is buy from Apple if you just want the basics, or if you want to call CS yourself later and fix the problems. Go to the carrier store if you have special account needs you need to take care of, or just have a specialized account.
Yea when adding an edge line you can't do it at the apple store. You can only upgrade existing lines to an edge plan in the Apple Store. Happened to me.
Same with Next. Further, you can;t set aside a phone for in store pickup (on Next). Frustrating, to say the least.
If you have a legacy plan, they may encounter problems upgrading or adding a line through Apple directly. For instance, I have the Any Mobile Talk & Text plan and I can't add a line through Apple directly, only through Verizon. There may be issues upgrading at Apple if you have a legacy plan with a promotional data plan such as a double the data plan.
Also, Apple stores can't transfer upgrades b/t lines. And of course business accounts cannot upgrade through any 3rd party retailers including Apple.
But other than that, it should be the same upgrading at an Apple store.
yes...and you can sill do this if you were to by the phone at Apple.

Corporate employee discounts are fine, it is the business accounts that you can't do at Apple.
For sure they can't so an upgrade on a UDP line at the Apple store w/o you losing your UDP. They should be able to do an Edge purchase w/o losing your UDP but you would have to try it and see whether or not their system tries to force you off of UDP or not.
Why don't you just use the Best Buy Method to get a subsidized phone using your upgrade ordering through Apple online? You can read all about it here:

You keep your UDP for sure that way. Be sure and read the wiki in that link. Even though it is called the Best Buy Method, you can do it through Apple online. What phone is on your line now?

Click on the link and read it. If you have unlimited data plan (UDP) you can use your subsidized upgrade and keep your UDP. You don't have to pay full price on Edge.
If you have an S5, you could do the UDVZWIP4 Method described in the wiki in that link I posted above and ordering from Apple online.
Upgraded from a 5 to a new iPhone 6!
I was gonna take out a loan from my bank and buy the phone direct from Verizon since I wanted to keep my Unlimited Data.
Instead, I went into my local Apple Store and see if i could qualify for a Barclay's card(to basically loan out the phone). I was happy that it worked and almost got tempted to get an iPad Air along but didn't wanna ball out!
I believe i told the specialist to get me the newly released contract-free phone that just came out and all i did was slip my sim and voila i'm back to where am at with an inch increase on my phone and an awkward grip.

I went to Verizon and bought the 6 plus on the EDGE program. I went with the 2gb more everything , but the rep said a code popped up in system to get 4gb for the same price so he gave it to me.. Anyone here know why that happened? not complaining obviously, just curious

You can use your upgrade to get a subsidized phone and keep your unlimited data. You just have to do one of the methods in this thread - be sure and read the wiki.

Why on earth did you give up unlimited data if you bought the phone on Edge?
How much per month is your new bill compared to your old bill not including the price of the phone on Edge?

MY bill ends up being about $20 more, but that includes the price of the phone as well..

i rarely go over 2gb so unlimited data was reaaly a non issue for me, but like i said i got 4 or the price of 2. i will never go over that, im pretty much always on wifi
