I was in London yesterday and this morning so decided to try Apple Pay Express Mode on my iPhone 14 Pro Max

Set up my 'express' card in settings, no issues

However I found it very intermittent as to it actually working if the phone was in the 'locked' state, sometimes nothing appeared to happen apart from the barrier declining entry, other times an image of my card appeared in the dynamic island area of the screen with an exclamation mark next to it

I started quickly staring at my phone before touching it on the reader so it was in a 'unlocked' state but that sort of defeats the object in the first place!

Has anyone else had more luck? This was using a Natwest debit card

I only use it on my Watch, works 99.9% of the time using my Barclaycard.

I use it regularly and I’d say it works most of the time. I find it super convenient too - once in a while it fails though

I had an issue last year with Apple Pay on the Tube in general, then I discovered that it works best if you tap the top of the phone against the card reader (I had been tapping the back of the phone as if the card reader was a wireless charging pad) - 100% success rate since than (all be it only 2 additional trips into London)

I have found this is the way to use contactless with a lot of these more modern machines.
