Apple Pay is now accepted at all Costco warehouses in the United States, at in-store checkouts, according to the wholesale retailer.

Costco has been equipping its warehouses with contactless payment terminals over the past several months, and as of this week, it has activated contactless payments at all of its 750 locations across the country. Costco is also outfitting its gas stations with contactless readers, but only a few have gone live.

Costco had previously been trialing Apple Pay at a warehouse in Issaquah, Washington, near its corporate headquarters, and a handful of other locations, but only now has acceptance rolled out to all of its stores.

The tap-to-pay functionality of Costco Anywhere credit cards is also working now. Costco launched this Visa-branded card a few years ago, in partnership with Citi, enabling Costco members to earn 2% cash back on purchases from Costco and Costco.com. It also doubles as a Costco membership card for entry.

As one of the biggest retailers in the United States, Apple Pay acceptance at Costco was long awaited. Apple Pay will also be launching at pharmacy chain CVS and convenience store chain 7-Eleven in the U.S. later this year.

Update: Costco says it completed its contactless payments rollout in the United States on August 10, excluding its gas stations.

"We've added additional mobile payment options to make your next visit more convenient," said Costco, in a statement issued to MacRumors. "Costco members can now use Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Pay at U.S. Costco locations."

Should be interesting to see how this works at the gas pumps..

It would be nice if the membership card could be readable contactless from wallet because since the transition to the Costco Visa, it is random if the pumps will recognize the card.

I love the convenience of Apple Pay so was pleasantly surprised when I was able to use it earlier this week. If Costco somehow would allow you into the club w/o physically having the membership card, then I think this whole solution would be perfect. There were many times in the past when I wanted to go shopping but couldn't because I didn't have the membership card with me. I now have the Costco Credit Card and it's my primary card (there are some great perks) so I almost always have access to the store now.

Still have to drag the stupid membership card along to the checkouts! How dumb, if I use Apple Pay, it should also send my membership information! OR the Costco app should accomplish this AUTOMATICALLY!

When I pay at the pump I can use my Costco credit card swiped ONCE, when I go in the store I have to do so TWICE: once to show membership, and a second time to pay -- same if I use Apple Pay. :( What a DUMB customer experience!

What about using Apple Pay in the app & website for online orders?!

Meanwhile, Costco Canada has been accepting Apple Pay for a few years now in the warehouse ... but for some reason not at the gas pumps. Pumps do have contactless readers, it's just Apple Pay doesn't work. Hopefully, we can get Apple Pay at the pumps too!

A few weeks ago at Costco, I had noticed the card reader was set up for contactless and it worked with my card to the surprise of the cashier. Apple Pay will add a step for those whose membership card is their credit card since you have to give it to the cashier anyway, but happy to see the integration.

At my CostCo, they only accept Visa. I have a Mastercard I'd prefer to use and it is setup in Apple Pay. Does that now mean that Costco will accept my Mastercard if used via ApplePay? Or can they limit to Apply Pay only using Visa cards on the back end?

Walgreen's App does something similar. When you hold it near the terminal, the membership card pops up. One click to enter and then another click to pay. Really smooth. Wish more stores did that.

Can someone verify - Do you still have to hand over your Visa/Membership card before paying?

If this is the case, then Apple Pay is pointless. Since I'm already using my Visa as my membership, why pull something else out of my pocket when I already have my Visa in hand?

This adds ZERO benefit, so long as you have to first get your card out for membership validation! Quicker to just tap the Costco Visa card on the terminal!

A digital Costco ID on the phones should be in use by now - or is it in use already?

Still very glitchy.
Was there over the weekend to pickup some photos and other items.
Took 3 tries at the photo counter before it accepted the payment.
Didn't work at all at the food court or the main registers. Kept getting "Not Authorized".

Good to hear more merchants supporting Apple Pay. 7-Eleven is even on board now. I thought I heard or read that it's coming to Target soon too.

I just like the fact that big chain companies have adopted Apple Pay, and continue to be adopted, making it more available in retail stores nationwide. The only problem is most of the time, customers and employees alike are not aware of this feature on their terminals. I still get weird "how did you do that?" looks from cashiers and people behind me in line. I read through the availability list once in a while to see if the stores I'll be visiting are using Apple Pay. This should be on Apple to promote it heavily or incentivize companies that have it to promote it so more people are aware of it. At least they are going in the right direction with it.

Only Visa Cards inside of Apple Pay.

This will be enough for me to switch from Sams Club to Costco
Sams club is better in that it has scan and go kind of Amazon go style. This beats Apple Pay in the traditional register to be honest. It is awesome to just walk out the door without stopping at a register.
It’d be nice if Apple Pay was in that sams club app. But it uses old fashioned store your credit card in the app method.

It doesn’t. Sams has a digital ID And scan and walk out the door tech. Wish they would put Apple Pay in it.

Contactless reader on US pumps too. They too also don’t work yet. It’s coming supposedly. Crappy part is it still makes you insert a Costco physical card!
