Apple Pay today expanded to Puerto Rico, which means iPhone, iPad, and Mac users living in the territory are now able to use Apple Pay for purchases in retail stores and online, even without a mainland credit or debit card.

Though Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, Apple Pay was not previously available for Puerto Rico banks, though Puerto Ricans have had access to the Apple Card and have been able to use Apple Pay with U.S. credit and debit cards.

As of right now, Banco Popular in Puerto Rico supports Apple Pay, so Banco Popular cardholders in the territory can add eligible cards to the Wallet app to use as a contactless payment method. Banco Popular cards are able to be used at any location that accepts Apple Pay.

Apple first launched Apple Pay in 2014, and has expanded it to dozens of countries and territories around the world.

In addition to expanding Apple Pay to Puerto Rico today, Apple also launched the Tap to Provision feature in Hong Kong, Macao, and Mongolia. Tap to Provision lets users add eligible credit and debit cards to the Wallet app by tapping the card on the back of the iPhone.

I’ve been using Apple Pay In Puerto Rico for more than 5 years. It’s not that it was not available until now. But now some local bank card support it. You could easily get a USA credit card living in Puerto Rico and use it for Apple Pay.

Apple Pay yes, the banks supporting it directly for their cards no. That is what just got presented.

So, was the delay Apple's fault, or crappy banks?
Crappy third world country bank tactics, with aging architecture that is falling apart... it's a miracle we finally got it. In PR every thing takes centuries, and the banks are the worst of the worst with their dumb policies.

The point is it wasn’t available for use with cards issued by Puerto Rico’s local banks and now it is. That’s what they mean by “apple pay now available in Puerto Rico”.

Hope this bank is POPULAR enough to garner merchant support at least on the same levels as the contiguous 48.
Oh merchant support has existed for years in Puerto Rico. It’s just that no cards from the local banks could be added to wallet until now (but lots of Puerto Ricans were already using apple pay with cards from the 50 states).

And Apple probably let years pass before even thinking about talking to any local banks. They have done that before. With Mexico, for example, Apple didn’t talk to local banks at all for about four years after the US launch of Apple Pay. Then, once they did talk to banks, it took another 2-3 years to get the local banking system ready for it. 7 years total wait time and more than half of it was 100% Apple’s fault. Something similar may have happened with Puerto Rico.
