Apple Pay sans iPhone 6

I know an iPhone 6 is required for Apple Pay (because of the NFC), but if I have an iPhone 5S, and get the Apple Watch (which can be used for Apple Pay), would I just be able to load up my credit card(s) onto my phone but use my watch for the actual transaction?
