Apple today announced it will donate $10 to the National Park Foundation for every purchase made in the U.S. using Apple Pay on Apple.com, in the Apple Store app, or at an Apple Store, up to a maximum of $1 million.

Apple has supported the National Park Foundation with this annual charitable initiative since 2017. This year, the program runs from today through August 25.

Apple celebrates U.S. national parks every August with special content across Apple Maps, Apple Podcasts, and other apps. In addition, on August 25, Apple Watch users can unlock a special national parks award in the Fitness app by recording a workout of 20 minutes or more with any app that adds workouts to the Health app.

Apple CEO Tim Cook is a national parks enthusiast, commenting "Every time I visit a national park, I'm struck by their extraordinary beauty and incredibly rich history. We're proud to partner with the National Park Foundation to help preserve these natural treasures that inspire so many people. Their important work helps ensure that future generations will be able to experience that same sense of awe, wonder, and reverence for the planet we call home."

1) Get people to buy something from Apple
2) Profit!
3) Donate $1 million to National Park Foundation
4) Get tax write off on $1 million donation
5) Profit!

If you really wanted to show you care, you’d donate the $1 mil up front instead of saying you’ll do it if 100,000 people buy something from us within 6 days
Or, if you and 99,999 of your friends purchase a $9 Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter …

$1 million dollar cap? Apple had almost $400 billion in fiscal year 2023. They are donating a whopping 0.00025% of their revenue. That's like someone making $100,000 a year donating 25 cents.
People sure do love spending other people’s money. Apple had roughly $94bil net revenue in 2023.

Some of the responses here are just plain ignorant. $1 million is a nice chunk of change and the National Park Foundation is far from the only cause that Apple donates to so percentages and comparisons to revenue are pointless.

Apple does many things worthy of complaints, this ain't one of them. Grow up people.

How much did Microsoft donate? How much did Alphabet donate? How much did Amazon donate? How much did Meta donate?

Google at least seem to be in the $100k-$500k category at least per the website. Since you were wondering.

I just hate when a corporation plays the philanthropy bound to customer spending card. The truly philanthropic thing would be to donate the $1 million, no strings attached.
I have mixed feelings about this. Running a promotion like this is good for user engagement, and drives hype. Aside from the donation, it is also "advertising" for the National Park Foundation, which users probably wouldn't be thinking of on their own.

Just making the donation & posting a press release would have less social impact. That said, I'd prefer if they ran the promotion BUT at the end donate the $1m regardless

Good point.
