Hello,

I got a hand-me-down Apple Pencil (the first one) and I've left it to charge for a long time yet still having trouble getting it to connect to my iPad. It will connect momentarily then disconnect. It will show battery 90 or 100% and then immediately after that it will change to 3%.

Does this mean the battery is dead? Or is there anything I can do to make this Apple Pencil work again?

Thank you

It sounds like the battery has failed. The batteries in the pencil are small and don't respond well if they've been left discharged for a long time. Apple will replace it for $29.

Its fine

Same happened to mine last week.

Hadn't used it for a while. Tried to charge as im used to it charging rapidly in a few minutes.... - and it never got past 3%.

I assumed it was faulty - however all you need to do is actually try to use the pencil quickly - draw, tap, etc... then try to charge again - you'll find it changes fine after that.

Thanks,

Hmm yeah that didn't work for me. Couldn't get it to work at all, bluebooth connection kept cutting out, never got it to actually draw or tap anything.

I called apple support and they're hooking me up. Sending me a brand new one, with a box to send the old one back. I have to pay for the full new pencil up front (credit card), then when they get the old one back they're going to refund me ~70 bucks, so it's like I'm only paying for the $29 battery replacement fee plus shipping. Works for me!
