Hopefully somebody can help me understand iCloud better.

I have an iPhone with 64GB of space and a MacBook Pro with 256GB of space. I connect an external drive of 1TB that has 600GB worth of photos and family videos.

I have used iCloud before for the photos but cancelled it 12 months ago.

I need help with settings, I have gotten a little worried about losing all the family photos, hence the reason I am using iCloud.

I have the 2TB iCloud subscription from this week and turned iCloud on the iPhone and Mac for photos. I turned off optimise and went for download original photos.

What seems to have happened is my external storage has now been filled. My ideal solution is to have a hard copy of all my photos and videos on my external drive, all of the photos in the iCloud and an iCloud version on my iPhone. I want to transfer new photos from the iPhone every so often and for them to upload to the iCloud. What settings do I need to use and why will my external storage be full if the photos it has uploaded are already stored on the external drive?

Thanks
