Hi,

I export my astrophotography images in 32bit TIF floating format and import them to Apple Photos.
Never had any issues, and my older images are displaying fine, but when I import new one now, it doesn't display properly.

I wonder if anyone could do me a favour and download the image and test if it works fine for you in Photos app?
For me it shows as greyscale image and looks weird. Displays properly in other programs.

DOWNLOAD:

Thanks!

Imported to Photos. Displayed as lots of coloured noise.
Exported original from Photos. Exports correctly.
My conclusion: Photos can import, store and export the tif, but can't display it.

Interesting that QuickLook and Preview can load and display it, but Finder's Get Info shows coloured noise.

I can't find a reference to what TIF formats are accepted by Photos. I wonder if it is the compression algorithm and not just 32-bit float.

Thanks a lot.
I have tried no compression and 2 compression types, same results.

It’s the first time having this issue and my old 32bit images work fine, strange.

Now I don’t know if it’s a bug in Photos or Pixinsight.

Looks normally when imported into Photos on Sequoia 15.2 beta. Finder preview does display noise, as others also reported. MBP M1 32 GB.

Looks normally everywhere on Ventura, Mac Studio M1 64 GB.

How much RAM do you have?

I DL your image, opened it in Photos, and it was synced with iCloud.

While it was syncing, the image was displayed almost correctly, but with an extra 1/5 black background to the right.

Immediately after sync, I expanded the image to fill-screen, and it turned stochastic.

Went to talk to my SO (and get some more coffee) . . . after ~5min I came back, and the image was displaying correctly in Photos. I can scroll back through my photos in fill-screen, and scroll back to the image displaying as you had intended.

Each subsequent re-expand to fill-screen produces the stochastic, and and after ~5min, the image suddenly displays correctly. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t think it has anything to do with RAM since my older images from a month ago display correctly. It might take quite a bit of time for them to be fully sharp when zooming in but they look fine.

Definitely not behaving properly in Photos even on my M1 Max 32GB with Sequoia 15.1.1, so looks like a bug in Photos if it's working on Ventura etc.

It's fine in Preview and in Quick Look.

When I select one of the 32-bit images that is displaying properly, export it as original, and re-import it into the Photos app, the image is broken.

It's definitely a bug with the Photos app.

Explore more Export Options variations?

I tried a few variations @ 32bit (on a small crop of the Original) and achieved the same results, but I did not try variations @16b (or 24b).

Maybe drop your Export to 16bit for general consumption?

I tried with Affinity Photo 2, but I get garbage-out (probably less the App, and more my inexperience working with 32b photos).

I’m exporting in the same way for years.
It has to be bug in Photos.

I am using Pixinsight.

Looks like Photos suddenly has issue with 32bit floating point tif. Normal 32bit works fine.

Really odd since my old images are displaying fine.

I had it visible after zooming and waiting. But now I can't repeat that.

This would seem to be the answer. Wait for 15.2 - probably only a week or two.

Already tried updating to 15.2
Also it doesn't show up properly on iCloud.com

What I can't understand is why my old files are displaying fine unless I re-import them... lol
