Apple posted their quarterly earnings that fell from a year ago, but on slightly higher revenue:

For the fiscal third quarter ended June 28, Cupertino, California-based Apple said it had net income of $19 million, or 5 cents a share, down from $32 million, or 9 cents, a year ago. Revenue rose to $ 1.55 billion from $1.43 billion.

Apple's financial results conference call takes place at 5:30pm.

Not Bad

This seems to be good news for Apple. It beat what the market had been predicting by 3 cents per share. It will be interesting to see how much came from growth in its investments (ie from the $4billion in "cash" it has). Nice to see revenues grow in a climate like this. Obviously Apple appears to be selling its low margin products very well. Though this is totally expected since the towers in theory have a very healthy margin in Apple's favor & I suspect sales this quarter were extremely poor for the PowerMacs. The 12" and 17" powerbooks probably did well. An updated 15" would probably sell like hotcakes, further improving Apples margins. The consumer line (iMacs, iPods, eMacs, iBooks) probably accounted for a greater share of the revenue than in the past. Wonder how the Apple Software sales contributed to it all? I suspect iLife margins are poor (given most of them are given away for free anyway, though do help expand/maintain market share & help sell the computers).

Apple shipped 771,000 units in the quarter.

iMac: 287k (last quarter: 256k)
iBook: 190k (last quarter: 133k)
PowerMac G4: 133k (last quarter: 156k)
Powerbook: 161k (last quarter: 166k)

Clearly, next quarter will see more sales. For one, there is the new G5 which many people were waiting for as it is the "next big thing" but also back to school rush will bring a lot more boys and girls to the Apple camp.

Things I'd like to know...
1. revenue on software.
2. how are the retail stores performing (I live in tampa and the Apple store in International Mall is probably THE busiest store in there, bad economy I guess.)?
3. What's the current count on iTMS sales from the last time we heard?
4. Any outlook from the future? (please... a hint?)

I am hoping that the PowerMac number will get up to 300k with the G5. It would be really nice if they could hit 1 million units in Q3.

well, that looks good to me. The "consumer" products are doing well, and help is here/ coming soon for those flagging "pro" products. It would be worrisome if the imac/ ibook weren't doing well, since it's not so clear when they will get big updates.

Is the emac included in the imac figure or didn't they sell any:D

displays?

How about the Apple displays? Has their huge price cuts a few months back increased sales? Those numbers would be interesting as well. It will also be interesting to see how many people who buy the G5 towers will also buy a display from apple. I know a few people, including myself, who bought the G5, and will not be buying an Apple display.

I think there is enough pent-up demand within the mac community alone to sell 300k G5s. Hopefully there will be a larger-than-usual number of 'Switchers' as well.

The question is, however, whether Apple will be able to ship that many, with projected ship dates in August and September, it's possible Q3 could come and go before too many actually get out the door.

yeah, I was wondering about the emac too. But don't knock them! The emac is a much better deal than the imac these days.

In our dreams.

If those numbers happen it will be go against everything the Apple beancounters announced today.

North of 200,000 G5 Powermacs is achievable but sales will be nowhere near the year 2000 figures of 350,000 units, simply because the paradigm shift is away from desktops to notebooks.

Given the pent up demand for good PowerMacs I'd not be surprised at all to see 300-400k sold in Q3. Whether that could be sustained is another story......

I wasn't. I don't have a problem with them at all. I think they're great value for money.

Consumer vs Pro

It's good to see the consumer market strong. That means we are making good consumer products. Sure, us *geeks* want out of this world and more than competitive consumer and pro products, but I assure you, a large majority of mac users won't ever make full use of their macs.

It also means that Apple loyalists are staying with apple and buying consumer products rather than pro because they're on a budget, but they can still meet their needs on the consumer versions.

And I suspect eMac was rolled in with iMac.

I can't wait for the pro market to take off with the G5's and the revamps of the PowerBooks.
