From events gone by I seem to remember Steve et al. running a question and answer session immediately after the keynote, where journalists could ask things that perhaps weren't clear in the demos or the Apple team could further expand on points. Did this not happen yesterday?
I'm asking because surely reverting the name simply back to iPad, and 'The new' iPad as it is presently known would have been a major talking point which could have been clarified for everyone. It could have given us a better gauge of how this would apply to future product lines (iPhone).
Personally, whilst a bit strange and a surprise, I think in the long term this could be a great idea. The Apple PC's prosper under their simple moniker, with us referring to them as early 2008 model etc. It seemed Apple was on track to fragment their product ranges, with their 6th iteration and naming of iPhone coming up - and their been no correlation between the iPad and iPhone lines (iPhone 4S and iPad 2 share an A5 processor, but you wouldn't be able to see the similarities in their cycles from their respective monikers.)
Perhaps some of Apple's thinking behind the decision? Streamlining the products and simplifying them is something Apple has become famous for championing.
