There are now more than 2.5 billion active Apple devices, the company announced today.

"We are also excited to announce that our installed base now has more than 2.5 billion active devices, which is a testament to incredible customer satisfaction for the very best products and services in the world," said Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a press release announcing the company's record-breaking earnings results.

Apple said it had more than 2.35 billion active devices in the year-ago quarter, and the number continues to rise. It shows that Apple has a massive opportunity to sell services, ranging from Apple Music subscriptions to iCloud+ storage plans to the all-new Apple Creator Studio bundle with Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, and more apps.

Apple hardware is just built well - much better than their competitors and the devices get software updates many years following the initial purchase. Sometimes even software updates over a decade after the product’s release!

I remember when a consumer electronics device (or family of devices) hitting 100M sold was a really big deal. Two and a half billion being active at a given moment? These things are no longer consumer electronics — they’re a new lobe of our brains, conveniently externalized. It was a very on the dl way of morphing into a race of cybernetic organisms, in hindsight.

The number of actively used Apple Accounts would be a more meaningful number IMO. I have seven devices registered under my account, not counting one Pair of AirPods. I bet some users have even more devices per account.

But it's an impressive achievement for sure. Probably the largest number they could come up with for the IR call.

Apple has 1+ Billion active and repeat customers. 2.5 Billion active devices sounds reasonable.

nah, that can't be, MR posters tell me the iOS 26 sucks, no-one wants it, they miss all product deliveries and that Apple is doomed

The OS sucking is very different than buying it. I truly hate 26, but can't wait to buy my 18Pro and ATV (if it ever comes out).

I have about 15 of those active devices. Do I get a trophy? 😀

The long-game, Apple-style move to subscription services.

Hooray.

I get it, these services are expensive to operate, but it does take away that premium, “everything out of the box” feel it used to have. I think that persisted over time even with Apple Music and iCloud thanks to things like Pages and a few other apps. That has definitely been rapidly eroding.

This is why they charge companies 30% on the App Store. Where else can you get easy access to 2.5 billion users with 1-click purchase...

Very good point, even if it points to ATV, one of Apple's least expensive products that isn't an accessory.
But- If I buy a $400 Motorola Android phone today, for how long will it get security updates? 🤔

It's a $129 Motorola phone and I think it was two for sure.

Edit: I looked it up, two years of OS updates and three years of security updates after that.

As to the other comment about Macs, the oldest I have in routine use is a 2010 Mac Pro. It boots either Mohave, Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon (the current version) or (shudder) Windows 8.1.

Second oldest is the 2012 mini in the shop, also either Mohave or the MATE version of Mint 22.3. The 2002 Quicksilver still works too.

The hardware is definitely solid except for certain capacitors in the Mac LC era.

That does bring up the question of what Apple counts as 'an active device.'

Huge number of devices. Think many will take Apple Care and sales from this alone will bring in a lot of money.

Think you maybe in the minority.
