I've read much debate on MacRumors regarding the $29 Apple Rechargeable Batteries, and I can't decide whether they are worth it or if there are other rechargeable battery systems on the market. I've read they are rebranded Sanyo Eneloop batteries, which I have read are good. I have a bad Radio Shack recharge from a few years ago and the batteries barely hold a charge. I realize they only charge two at a time, but as our household had a plethora of wireless devices I was planning on purchasing two units.

Thoughts? Waste of money? Better alternatives?

I suggest you buy this charger instead:

Charges 8 cells independently and has a refresh feature, all for $28. :)

All you need then is 4 or 8 pack of Eneloops and you'll be set.

Looks good! Does the charger shut down once the batteries are fully charged as the Apple charger? Also, I read somewhere for devices such as wireless keyboards, mice - anything you use on a daily basis - slow discharge batteries aren't the best (someone recommended slow discharge for remotes and items rarely used). Are all Eneloops the same in terms of discharge rate? (I believe people were debating 1000 mAh, 2000 mAh and 2700 mAh) I believe the Apple rechargeable batteries are 1900-2000 mAh?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the help!

There are several protections built in on the 8800. Eneloops are good for low and high drain devices. They are the only batteries you'll ever need.
