Apple today released iPadOS 17.7.8, an update that is designed for iPad users who are not able to install the latest iPadOS 18 update.

iPadOS 17.7.8 comes a few days after Apple stopped signing iPadOS 17.7.7, the prior version of iPadOS that was available on older iPads. iPadOS 17.7.7 was preventing some users from being able to log into their apps, and iPadOS 17.7.8 presumably addresses the issue.

According to Apple's release notes, the update includes security fixes.
This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users. For information on the security content of Apple software updates, please visit this website: https://support.apple.com/100100
iPadOS 17.7.8 is available for the sixth-generation iPad, 10.5-inch iPad Pro, and the second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. It can be downloaded by going to the Software Update section in the Settings app on eligible devices.

No way we got a repeat of last year

In May 2024, iOS 17.5 released, it had a problem, iOS 17.5.1 released just a week later

Now in May 2025, iPadOS 17.7.7 released, it had a problem, iPadOS 17.7.8 released just a week later

Good to see updates for older devices but however just to be safe it might be better to wait for a few days before updating. Hopefully there will be no issues.

Might be a good idea as all older versions of 17 are no longer signed, including 17.7.6. No rolling this one back.

Quick interwebs search turned up a Reddit post that says the login issue is fixed fwiw.

They should have just re-released iPadOS 17.7.7 with an updated build just like how they release an RC of a different build and public release with a higher build.

Just last Friday (Australian time) I had the problem where I was trying to Restore an older iPad. Apple Configurator 2 kept downloading 17.7.7 even though it was unsigned on that day. ipsw.me had the signed version 17.7.6 that I could point Finder to instead. (Couldn't work out how to point AC2 to IPSW files. Maybe that feature is absent. Looks like it's really the end of the road for AC2.)

It was a bizarre situation where the new version was unsigned and the old version was signed.

This is new version chop suey right now.

Does it fix the horrible parental features? When I try to update the apps on my kid’s iPad on iPadOS 17, I have to enter the password fo each and every app. Who invents this stuff?
