Following on earlier releases for Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows, Apple today released Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Leopard. The update ensures that users running Mac OS X Leopard will be able to transfer their data to a new Mac running OS X Lion using the included Migration Assistant software.
About Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Leopard

This update addresses an issue with the Migration Assistant application in Mac OS X Leopard that prevents transfer of your personal data, settings, and compatible applications from a Mac running Mac OS X Leopard to a new Mac running Mac OS X Lion.
The update weighs in at 4.98 MB and requires Mac OS X 10.5.8.

Just me or is the Leopard boxing and logo much sexier than Snow Leopard/Lion?

I agree. They had a good theme to go on with Time Machine being a new feature. Snow Leopard was mostly under the hood changes, so all they could think to put was a picture of a snow leopard. :p Can't explain Lion however. Between Launchpad and Mission Control, you'd think they could have made the box art something space program related... "Lion blasts into the future"

EDIT: Derp, there are no Lion boxes. Ok, then the picture in the MAS. :p

So.... how are you supposed to update Leopard before the USB version of Lion is released?

The only option is to buy snow leopard, then buy Lion, for a total of $60. Still very cheap IMO. It's not clear wether or not you'll even be able to upgrade to Lion from Leopard directly, even with the USB drive. Actually, priced at $69, it's probably designed specifically for Leopard upgrades, so it may work.

I had no problems transferring my data with Migration Assistant from my old G4 Mac running Leopard to my 2011 iMac running Lion. Well... there is one caveat, I clean installed Snow Leopard on my iMac then migrated first. After the migration, that's when I updated to Lion.

Either way, I had no issues but glad to know that Apple can still address an issue for people with Macs still running Leopard.

Better late than never. Only had problems with all three new Macs I bought.

I think this update is aimed more towards people transferring data from a PPC Mac to a new Mac running Lion.

Yup. Been planning to get a new Intel machine this weekend and finally retiring my ol' Power Mac G5 running Leopard.

I was aware of the issue and was planning to move my stuff over manually - and dreading it. This update comes just in the nick of time!

Bingo. This would have been really useful two weeks ago. Oh well, it worked fine migrating from my Time Machine drive instead; it was just annoying to waste time figuring out that I couldn't migrate directly from the old machine.

Yes i am... Going to get me a new imac with Lion for my b-day present.

What about me and my G4 from 01 using the migration program?

Lion is no different than any other Mac OS X release and upgrade from Leopard will be just fine.

It is, but it only matters for people who want to do a migration over a network. That is the only situation in which you need to run Migration Assistant on the source computer.

If you are doing a migration via a Firewire cable, with the source computer in Firewire Target Mode, there is no operating system or application running on the source computer (it is just acting like an external hard drive), and this update is not necessary.

The network migration feature was new in Leopard, but also retrofitted for 10.4.11 via the Migration and DVD/CD Sharing update. If that also has a compatibility problem with Lion then it may not be possible to do a network migration from Tiger to Lion, leaving the options of Firewire, upgrading to a later system first, cloning the internal drive and migrating from that, or pulling out the internal drive and connecting it to the new computer.

Not with the App Store edition.

You can't even buy or download Lion unless you are running Snow Leopard; the "Install Mac OS X Lion" application won't run on Leopard; if you used a Snow Leopard machine to create an install disk from the disk image inside the Lion installer, and booted from that, it won't install on volume which contains an installation of Leopard.

The target volume for the install must either contain no installed copy of Mac OS X, or the installed OS must be Snow Leopard or Lion. I tried it with a partitioned external drive that had several installed systems. The installer didn't allow me to choose the partitions with Leopard, but all other partitions were permitted. (Haven't tried Tiger but if Leopard is not permitted then Tiger is probably the same.)

I'm hopeful that the USB edition of Lion will be able to be installed directly on top of Tiger or Leopard, but we won't know that until it is released.

Yeah, I could have used this about a week ago. Instead I had several evenings of fun :)p) finding the various files and folders I needed to manually move from my PPC iMac to my new MBP. On the other hand, I guess I wouldn't have really wanted the coarse-grained migration of files that Migration Assistant provides so I guess it's not all that bad (I didn't want to bring all 11 years of updated and migrated files from 10.1 through 10.5 along to my shiny new computer).

I'm not sure if I should use migration assistant or just bring over files manually? I feel like I don't want to bring over all my "mess" from the old comp to the new.

Don't know what I'll do. =/

Yea I'm just going to gather what I want on an external drive manually and then bring it over, leaving the rest behind.

This came a few days late for one of my customers...had to scramble for a firewire cable I didn't have on me to boot into target mode.

Apple was still shipping Leopard on new Macs less than 2.5 years ago.

This update is essential if the new computer is a MacBook Air...no firewire!

Migration Assistant from Power Mac G5 = disaster for me

My first day with my new MacPro was going so well, until I decided to take the easy way out and try the shiny new "migration assistant".

Instead of transferring the documents file as I had specified, from only one user on the G5 - EVERYTHING from the G5 transferred to the new machine - EVERY user, application, document everything, and I had specified the application NOT be transferred knowing pretty much nothing from the old G5 would be functional with Lion.

Had to clean install Lion and guess what? You don't get OS DVDs so my only option was to re-download Lion from internet. I started the download at 7:15 pm and the progress bar stated it would be 5 hours 49 minutes. At 12:30 pm the "progress" bar showed 1/4 yet still a time of 5+ hours. At 2:30 am, the progress bar had moved milimeters, yet still read time remaining of 5+ hours. Then at 2:45 am, with the progress bar still around 1/4 highlighted, the machine restarted and voila, Lion. 7.5 hours total.

Apple Care said they had not heard of this problem, so I guess I was the lucky one to be first. Best of luck to all.
