Apple today introduced the long-awaited low-cost iPhone SE, and alongside of the new device, Apple has unveiled silicone and leather cases designed to fit it.

Silicone cases for the new iPhone SE are available in pink sand, white, and black, and are priced at $35, while leather cases for the device are available in (PRODUCT)RED, black, and midnight blue and can be purchased for $45.

According to the compatibility section of the case product listing, the cases are only compatible with the new iPhone SE, but because of the design similarities between the iPhone SE and the iPhone 8, existing iPhone 8 cases will also fit. That should mean that earlier iPhone cases, such as iPhone 7 cases, should also fit the new iPhone SE models.

In fact, Apple confirmed to The Verge that cases designed for the iPhone 8 "will work fine on the SE."

Nice. They'll sell a ton of the phones and its good the old cases still fit so there will be a huge selection for buyers.

Excellent. I can get case now and have it ready for when the phone arrives!

Yet the regular iPhone 11 can’t get leather cases...
I think they positioned the iPhone 11 as a "consumer focused" phone. The Pro and the SE will be for the "upper class clientele." And reason being, is that segment, don't actually care about the price of an item, rather how the item works. They don't care if its the "cheap" iPhone, they care that it has a home button which is what they're used to. So there still will need to be leather cases that serve that segment.

Of course, this is all just my opinion.

It's too bad the official cases have such a large unprotected area on the chin by the home button. :(
The leather case for the first-generation SE had complete coverage there, with a simple oval cutout for the lightning port.

The first-gen SE had the flat sides of the 5/5s series, which make getting such a case on and off much easier. The rounded sides make wrapping snugly around all four sides much more difficult.

It pains me that they're only offering White, Pink Sand, and Black. Pink Sand is like a few drops of pink got into a vat of white - not really much of a color. I wish they at least offered a Product RED silicone case, as a counterpart to the leather one (leather is very nice, but it's more slippery).

And yeah, the 8-series cases should fit perfectly (and vice versa) - Apple lists the same dimensions for both, down to the hundredth of a millimeter. Of course, Apple isn't doing a bunch of colors for the 8 any more either.

About a billion and one existing cases will fit it. It is among the most successful and ubiquitous form factors in history. Millions of accessories shops and stalls around the world are going to like Apple.

I’m going to venture a guess that it’s not that they’re indicating these won’t work with the 8, so much as they’re simply listing the iPhones that they currently directly sell that these will work with.
