Apple today released new firmware for the Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds that came out earlier this year. The updated firmware has a version number of 7B30, an update to the prior 7B24 firmware that Apple seeded out just after the Powerbeats Pro 2 launched.

We don't know what's included in the firmware, but the Powerbeats Pro 2 have a unique heart rate monitoring feature that's new to Apple earbuds, so it's possible the update is related to that feature.

Along with heart rate monitoring that's done through optical LED sensors in the earbuds, the Powerbeats Pro 2 feature Active Noise Cancellation, Personalized Spatial Audio, Apple's H2 chip for connectivity, and a redesigned acoustic architecture that allows for better sound.

The updated firmware can be installed on the Powerbeats Pro 2 by connecting them to power and ensuring that they are in Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's connected to Wi-Fi. Firmware can be checked on the iPhone by going to Settings > Bluetooth and tapping the Info button next to the Beats headphones in the list. Android users can download new Beats firmware through the Beats app for Android.

I've seen very good reviews of the PB Pro 2 and am thinking about getting a pair for workouts.

But I've held back so far because of reports that the HR functionality doesn't work while listening to music, a near deal-breaker for me.

If you install the new firmware, please let the rest of us know whether it allows simulatenous music playback and HR monitoring.

Thank you!!

One thing to remember, if you have apple watch the HR tracking is done through watch. As for HR not working if you workout with music on exercise equipment. Absolute garbage. I have and like them. Luckily I don't use the pairing function to exercise equipment.

One detail that has been mentioned. I like that the flat surface is the "button" BUT and it is a HUGE BUT. It is ridiculously sensitive, if you try to adjust the headphones a little bit, it counts as a press. I have/had the beats fit pro. There a press was a press. With the PB2 it really is a"feather like" glance to register.

EDIT: I haven't upgraded yet to new firmware but overall I haven't had any issues. Good sound and noise cancelling, for me the canceling of the Airpods pro 2 is noticeably better which surprised me.

Hopefully it will fix the audio EQ... I don't think they sound as terrible as some say, but there's room for improvement. I would assume the drivers are different than the APPro2, otherwise they would've borrowed the firmware settings. Most would agree the APPro2 sound quite good for such low power consumption.

there are two open questions:

- does it now support multipoint BT, which means: can you hear music from iPhone and transfer HR to Gym equipment at the same time?
(this is a little bit less than real multipoint BT: classic BT to iPhone and BT LE to gym equipment)

- is it possible to pair HR to any Garmin device?

With FW 7B24 both answers were: NO. Returned my device

Not releasing release notes when updates are available needs to end. Either its incompetence or neglect that makes this happen. At least the security ramifications of this are low.

I was interested in them but the fact that HR monitoring doesn't seem to be trusted, and that no one has mentioned whether charging is improved or not has made me hold back.
