Apple today released the fourth Studio Display 17 firmware, with the update coming almost three weeks after the release of the third beta. The fourth update coincides with the fourth developer beta of macOS Sonoma.

All Studio Display models are able to receive over-the-air firmware updates, but this firmware update is limited to Macs that are running the macOS Sonoma operating system at the current time. Studio Display owners with macOS Sonoma installed can go to System Settings > Software Update to install the firmware.

Apple has not provided details on what's included in the firmware update and no new features have been found by those running the betas. Release notes will likely be available when the software sees a public launch this fall alongside macOS Sonoma, but so far it does not seem like there are major feature additions in the software.

Waiting on all the snarky comments about a monitor needing a firmware update.

I personally think my Studio Display is fantastic and easily the best monitor I’ve owned. Even the camera works well in my brightly lit office. A great purchase since day one.

Anyone else still having problems updating it if there is anything attached or even if you just have a MacBook attached in clamshell mode?

These are likely just bug fixes and minor updates to ensure compatibility with Sonoma.

People (especially the ones who complain that “I just want a basic monitor”) have NO IDEA what Apple has in store for display tech over the next five years… There is amazing stuff coming up.

Think for example
- Vision Pro gives rise to a whole new type of content that is naturally DISPLAYED in 3D, not in 2D projection. Wouldn’t it be nice to have that outside Vision Pro?…
- TVs reached the “easily handled” point at 65”. By 75”, let alone 85” you feel you need white glove service to buy them (a too big to fit in a car), and install them. Isn’t there a better way? Well…

Unless Thunderbolt 5 is an incredible leap good luck getting a promotion 3D display. Thats at minimum double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4 and likely much more.

I will say though, considering apples struggle to even get 5K panels as a reasonable option on the market nearly a decade down from the 5K iMac, I am deeply skeptical that they have any ability to revolutionize the desktop monitor market. It’s not like they make panels themselves. (Yet…)

Nah, we’re way past that: https://appleinsider.com/articles/23/02/14/apple-issues-firmware-update-for-magsafe-3-charging-cable

Still waiting for a new beta firmware for my polishing cloth. There are just too many bugs in it.
This is so wild because it means they had to come up with a proprietary communication standard for the magsafe charger pins that can patch it. I wonder if the charging cable have or will one day have more processing power than the earliest Apple computers…

yes I have that problem. After I download the updates I have to reboot the machine. Then it will install.

Can someone post the build number please. I left my Mac updating whilst I took the dog out, not getting an update for the SD. Was wondering if it did it itself when I was out.

Mine currently says: Build 21A5291h

I don't have one (and likely will never), but I still find this very unsettling for a monitor. Seems like a crap ton of unnecessary overhead.
I do have one and I love it, it's connected to my Studio and I'm not running Sonoma on that.
I read about it when it first came out that it is running the full fledge iOS (someone can correct me if I remember wrong), I don't know really why that is other than it might be simpler to run iOS vs a ASDOS, but I don't really know.

I think ti is for the "follow the head" for the camera and then some audio capabilities that your require an A chip, the few monitor "controls" there are, certainly do not require that ...

Even if I do multiple reboots it keeps saying there is an update available, meaning it never successfully updates. It isn't until I disconnect all my devices and have my 14" MBP open and connected to the ASD does it successfully complete the firmware update.
