Apple today released a new Developer Strap for the Vision Pro, on the same day as the Vision Pro with an M5 chip became available to purchase at Apple Stores.

The second-generation Developer Strap offers data transfer speeds of up to 20 Gbps when connected to a Mac, whereas the original version was limited to USB 2.0 speeds of up to 480 Mbps. It is unclear if there are any other changes.

The overall design of the Developer Strap has barely changed, and it continues to provide the same audio experience as the standard Right Audio Strap.

The new Developer Strap is available to order now for delivery later this week, but it can only be purchased by Apple Developer Program members in countries where the Vision Pro is sold. In the U.S., the accessory remains priced at $299.

The new strap is compatible with both the original Vision Pro with the M2 chip, and the updated model with the M5 chip. However, it is unclear if data transfer speeds will be faster when using the new strap with the original Vision Pro.

Apple first released the Developer Strap in February 2024, when the original Vision Pro with the M2 chip launched. The accessory provides a USB-C connection between the Vision Pro and a Mac, for app development and diagnostic purposes.

The new Developer Strap can be ordered via Apple's developer website.

You guys know that when Apple designs and builds something, they do so to unprecedented standards? Apple could bake a cake and it would redefine industry standards and tolerances. This strap will probably live forever too.

$300 strap ... incredible

You'd think they'd be giving these out with the exceptionally limited developer interest in VisionOS.
Or Apple believes that devs have already invested so much in the Vision ecosystem that they'll shell out for this, too. Whether they do so grudgingly or with a shrug that's it just another business expense that can be partially written off at tax time, Apple gets the money either way.

Given how little support vOS has seen, this seems like a good way to treat devs if you want the few doing it to just punt.

It'd be like saying: "we know you're stuck having invested in our dead platform already, so we're going to screw you on a USB cable to help you keep doing that work".

A good way for Apple to get a middle finger back from Devs - lol

Unfortunately that's a common tactic in the tech world. Another example is enterprises with perfectly good Windows 10 machines that either have to buy an LTSC or replace them prematurely.

To all the people who think $300 is expensive for a developer. Have you ever hired a development team? With overhead, even a very small team will burn $300 in 20 or 30 minutes.

Ok, there might be a few hobby developers making stuff nights and weekends at home, but that is an exception. Most people who do this get a paycheck.

Not to mention its a completely optional accessory, Ive done dev work for the AVP without ever touching the strap

Man I wonder if they even make money… like you are paying 300$ to make an app that cost 5$ but who will buy your app…
Really you’re paying like $4,900 though.
Possibly less more likely more.

That’s one Vision Pro, one MacBook Air to develop on, one year developer account subscription and one developer strap.
You’ll probably want more than a MacBook Air but you could find a cheaper Mac used or on discount

I am assuming the point of the cable is so that when you are testing it speeds up the data flow [if large] rather than relying on wifi.
TBH I do this with the Quest - much better over the cable than wifi.

Yes, as well as speed up asset transfer, the old one was artificially limited to 480 Mbps making most WiFi systems significantly faster at transfer.
