After last week's release of Mac OS X 10.6.5, a number of users of the Server version of the operating system reported issues with the release, most notably a problem in which certain users were receiving mail intended for other parties. By the weekend, Apple had pulled both the combo and delta versions of Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server.

Yesterday, Apple released revised delta and combo versions of the update, moving from build 10H574 to 10H575. According to the security notes accompanying the "Version 1.1" release, the tweaked version does in fact address the mail issue.
A memory aliasing issue in Dovecot's handling of user names exists in Mac OS X Server v10.6.5 (10H574). On systems configured with Dovecot as a mail server, a user may receive mail that was intended for other users. This issue is addressed through improved memory management. Dovecot is only provided with Mac OS X Server systems. This issue only affects systems running Mac OS X Server v10.6.5 (10H574). This issue does not affect the Dovecot open source project.
Apple notes in its general support document on the Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server release that users who previously upgraded to the initial build released last week should reapply the update using the new version.
Mac OS X Server v10.6.5 (build 10H575), released on November 15, 2010, includes security content described in this article. If you installed Mac OS X Server v10.6.5 (build 10H574), released on November 10, 2010, you should reinstall the Mac OS X Server v10.6.5 Update.

Important: If you downloaded the standalone installer of Mac OS X Server v10.6.5 (build 10H574) prior to November 15, 2010, do not install it on a system running Mac OS X Server v10.6.5 (build 10H575), as that would revert the server to build 10H574.

How the hell is this Page 2 news and The Beatles being on iTunes is Page 1?
Surly this should be Page 1.

There's different priorities with Apple these days. MacRumors knows what gets the attention of it's members.

Even if it was on Page 1 news it wouldn't get the 1000's of posts like the Beatles stories have.

Um... staying on top of things would have meant catching the issue before releasing the update. Honestly, mail going to the wrong person is a pretty big deal.

In the pharmaceutical industry, for example, such a bug could easily cost you the entire company - and that's not an exaggeration.

If Apple had a QA department worth its salt, such things wouldn't happen. But they're probably too busy censoring dictionary apps from the AppStore...

Yeah, this is a big enough deal that someone in the OSX Server group is probably taking some serious heat.

I wonder if the issue was due to a new version of Dovecot being integrated, or some other issue. Dovecot is an awesome mail server by the way. I've set it up for a few clients and use it myself for IMAP.

It's good they caught it quickly, before too much mail was went missing. Still, if you're a business owner, this one was probably a major major problem. I wouldn't want to be an MIS manager trying to explain this one to my boss.

Love the insight. So true. Glad ppl have the balls to speak out the truth. :)

Any competent IT person would wait a good few weeks after release and/or install on a test server first.

That's exactly why apple (and other server vendors I'd guess) allow and even suggests that you should virtualize the server for testing. It's worse for private users that really don't have time to play around with virtualized servers.

Thousands of posts ironically declaring the respondants "didn't care".
I love this new paradigm. I urge that whenever a person doesn't care about an issue, s/he should send the local congressman an e-mail declaring his/her apathy on the issue.

Seeking advice for an MBP user

Ok, I didn't update anything last week. I don't think I did. So if I didn't, what do I do?
--------------------------
If I did (I could have), what do I do? I have a MBP 13". No network. Just my MBP. Thanks.

You don't have a network but you installed OSX Server on you MBP? Why?
