Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview, the experimental browser Apple first introduced four years ago in March 2016. Apple designed the Safari Technology Preview to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview release 112 includes bug fixes and performance improvements for Web Inspector, Extensions, CSS, JavaScript, SVG, Media, WebRTC, Web API, Text Manipulation, and Storage.

The current Safari Technology Preview release is the built on the new Safari 14 update included in macOS Big Sur with support for Safari Web Extensions imported from other browsers, tab previews, password breach notifications, web authentication with Touch ID, and more. The new Safari Technology Preview update is available for macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur, the newest version of the Mac operating system that's set to be released this fall.

The Safari Technology Preview update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.

Apple's aim with Safari Technology Preview is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. Safari Technology Preview can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

That's a pitty that there's no VP9 support on this build. Big Sur has it but with the latest MacOS Catalina with Safari TP 112 there's no 4k-support on youtube. Mhh...

you sure that is in safari? last I checked, the YouTube code had a test for safari and then blocked 4k. stupid google

It's already August 18 and only 4 developer betas for Big Sur and ONE public beta. Apple better get a move on - it's only a month until the usual GM release date. I still happen to believe that Big Sur must have been under development right along side Catalina, much like Windows 7 was developed at the same time as Vista. Windows 7 was in good shape ready for a quick release by the time MS and their customers were realizing Vista was a dud. Vista was the carrot and stick MS placated their customers with in order to have 2 years to polish Windows 7 and Catalina is the same idea - meant to placate us in order to have two development cycles to deliver the real deal.

All that said - I guess we won't be getting Developer beta 5 this evening...

Y'know, I always see it claimed that the Safari Technology Preview can be updated via the Software Update mechanism, but I've been using it for a while and it has never updated this way -- I always have to go to the STP site and download it manually.

Scratch that. I guess I've just been jumping the gun a bit, because there it is, big as life.

Umm Google isn’t blocking anything.. 4K YouTube is only in VP9 format unlike HD and below which is available in both H264 and VP9, so if browser doesn’t properly show support for VP9 it won’t play 4K simple as that regardless of browser. It’s not like 4K doesn’t work Firefox or Edge. Disable VP9 support in either of those two and you’d end up in HD and below only just like Safari.

I have BigSur and Catalina. Safari in Big Sur plays 4K, while in Catalina Safari TP does not. It’s seems the VP9 codec in the Catalina version of Preview isn’t functional.

Mh, this is odd. What Build Number is Safari on Big Sur Beta 4 and/or Beta 5? Beta 4 because it‘s the first build that support VP9. Maybe Safari TP isn‘t parallel in terms of featureset to Beta Safari on Big Sur.
